Psoriatic arthritis ?????
« on: June 16, 2003, 06:38:59 PM »
Hi guys,

was just wondering if any of you out there are suffering from psoriatic arthritis.
I have got recurrent joint probs and suffer from psoriasis since I was a child - but I am too much of a chicken to ask my doctor about it (asked a derm before but got an answer like "oh - doesn't matter if you have it or not, would not make a difference in your treatment anyway").

Has anyone been diagnosed with it  WITHOUT directly adressing the suspicion to your doctor?

cheers,

sheepful

 :)Haha, you sound like me!
I've been chicken too and am finally getting around to having the labwork done to check for RA. Better to know than not so you can get treatment I suppose!

Just an idea, why not put the links in the useful links forum, that way if the post gets archived we can still get the web links?

Hi Sheepful,
Just read your post.  I am new to kneegeeks as I ruptured my ACL about 1 month ago.  I have a little experience with RA as my hubby has it and yes it is seronegative psoriatic arthritis.  He was a very successful surgeon in Dayton, OH for >30 years and had to retire on disability due to his RA. So the dermatologist who gave you that answer in my book should be stripped of his/her medical license to practice.  In answer to your question, my husband is a physician so it was he who researched and came up with the idea that he did indeed have RA in spite of the negative tests as yes he did have psoriasis for quite some time (minimally in the early years I think). He is also allergic to Ibuprofen and ASA so was relying on cortisone injections in this knuckles to treat the pain and inflammation, this led to a weakening of the structure and one day while doing surgery his Right index knuckle gave out. This led to his retiement from surgery at a very early 50 years of age.  So if I were you, I would suggest it to your doctor and ask for evaluation.

Hi Sheepful,

Just noticed you were maybe wanting some insite on Psoriatic arthritis.  My best friend has it, and it has recently changed her life she has her good and bad days. But majority are good.  If you want any info my friend has always talked about her condition to me, and treatment. She has her psoriasis for a long time, and I watched  her go through lots of treatments for her lesions.

If I can be of help let me know, as because I cant drive anywhere at the moment, she is visiting me soon, usually its me visiting her. I spoke on the phone and she said she would probably be over this week. Her husband is home so even if she is not well she may still come.

Best Wishes and Take Care
Wyn :)

Hi Helen,

I know my friend started similar to you, but after a lot of years of flare ups and consulting with a rheumatologist,  her condition took many years later to give her a lot of trouble , everyone is not the same of course. I know she has many solutions, medications and injections occasionally.  She does have a lot of good days.  It took her specialist a while to prescribe what keeps her comfortable.
You can only take care of yourself by following your specialist orders and trying the different medications thats what my friend had to do.

Good luck and take care,
Wyn
