Where do I go from here????
« on: May 13, 2007, 05:53:03 AM »
the docs cant tell me what is wrong with my knee and why i am having soo much pain. the xrays, MRI, and ultrasound turned out normal, but my knee is telling me that something is wrong. for now, i am on crutches, and i am leaving for canada next sat. i have no idea what to do or who to go to. i am starting PT on the 23rd but it seems so far away. that is the day after i come back from canada, and i will have been on crutches for about 2 weeks at that point, so i think that i will look pretty pitiful for someone who hasnt had a surgery or "major: thing happen to them. my foot and ankle are still swollen and i dont know why. no blood clots and no injury. my OS has never seen anything like me before and has no idea, and neither do i. i am at the end of my rope. every time i mention something about my knee and how i know something is wrong, my mom says, "I think that you want something to be wrong or you expect something to be wrong."

please help,
i have no idea,
thanks,
jak

Hi Jak,

You don't have to have had major surgery to have something wrong with your knee. You are obviouslyin a lot of pain and need help to deal with it. In yor signature you state that you have ITBS. So this is a good start. You may consider going back to the doctor who diagnosed this and ask either for a referral to a sepcialist who deals only with knees, of if your doctor is qualified, he could provide you with a treatment plan.
Also, it could be that as your kneecap is poorly aligned, then intensive physio to strengthen the quads/VMO etc and other muscles affecting the kneecap could help a lot.
In the meantime, try RICE. This in itself should help to reduce the swelling. You could also take pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs. I know it's not ideal, but they can alleviate both the inflammation (which causes some of the pain) and fight the pain itself.
How many doctors have you seen? How much information have you given them? They will need to know things like what activities aggravate your knee, is the pain worse at night etc.
You may like to consider seeing a different OS altogether to get a fresh opinion. I'm sure there is a doctor out there for you somewhere -you just have to find him.

Good luck. Let us know what yo decide to do and how things turn out.

Take care,

Thanks for responding.
I was diagnosed by one GP and then I was diagnosed by an OS with ITBS. The malalignment came from the OS. I have seen 4 docs including one OS. the swelling is almost gone. I have tried motrin, ibuprofen, lodine, and naprosyn and those do not do anything. i have tried RICEing, didnt help either. when i went to the OS, i printed out 2 pages of symptoms to take with me. he liked the idea, but i felt like there were too many. everything aggravates my knees, even walking. i am having trouble finding docs cuz my insurance is not "widely" accepted on the west coast. i do have an application and sponsor to go to the Shriners Hospital here in Portland, but i think that my mom is getting sick of trying to find a doc. she thinks that i want something to be wrong with my knee, but i just want to find out what is causing me all this pain. i start PT on the 23rd and i will let everyone know how it turns out.

thanks,
jak
