Little one can't straighten knee, any ideas
« on: December 09, 2006, 10:24:19 PM »
My 7 1/2 year old was appently sitting on the back of a lawn chair and tipped it over backwards 3 weeks ago. Her leg went through the arm of the chair and bent sideways and up. Xrays show nothing. It did not swell much and any swelling that was there is now gone, however she can not straighten her knee completely and there is still pain on the kneecap. The knee appears quite solid as far as tendons a ligaments are concerned. An MRI has been ordered, but it will take a few weeks before an appointment will even be set up for that. We will also be refered to an othopedic specialist, however because of where we live we will probably have to travel hundreds of miles for the visit. Has anyone experienced the same type of injury that may have some insight to share.

Thanks for the comments and help. As a mom it is very difficult to see my child g through this and any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Children don't fake pain, regardless of the x-rays something is wrong. X-rays do not show everything. I could not straighten my leg very good once when I tore the cartilge. I had to have an MRI to reveal this as the x-ray did not show it. I've never heard of a 7-year-old tearing cartlidge but i guess anything is possible if twisted  bad enough.
Where do you live that you would have to travel 100's of miles to see an Orthopedic Doctor.  Every child should have contact with a good Orthopedic Doctor anyway, if I was as a child I wouldn't be having the problems I am now.

We are fearing that it is a torn cartlidge or maniscus. We live in Northern CA. 20 miles South of the OR border and 1 mile from the ocean. The problem is that we are on Medi-Cal and there are no specialists in the area that will take it. We may get lucky and only have to go 89 miles one way, but otherwise we are going to Portland Shriners Hospital. They are wonderful there. I have to take my son there once a year for a badly broken leg.

Anyway distance will not matter as long as my daughter is okay. This is my child that does the splits in the doorway or straight up the wall. she can lay on her stomach, arch her back and bring her feet up to her eyes. Now to see her not be able to straighten her leg is concerning. I worry if this will be an issue for the rest of her life.
