Constant knee swelling (both knees) any comments please?
« on: November 23, 2006, 09:21:17 AM »
Hi all, this is my first post as I stumbled across this site looking for information on knee conditions.  After browsing through some of the knee problems people have on here mine donít seem that bad but it is affecting my life and any advice or comments would be great.

For the past 2 months I have been experiencing constant swelling in both knees causing a severe reduction in range of motion and tightness at the back of my knees to the point, sometimes, of me not being able to fully straighten my legs.

My knees seem to take it in turns to swell up, I have been to the doctors and have my first hospital appointment with a physio this coming Thursday (30/11/06).

I will give a brief outline of  the last 2 months and perhaps someone can give me some possible causes (obviously Iím not expecting anyone to diagnose my problem but some comments would be nice ;)

I do a lot of weight training and have been squatting for the past year and a half with no problems.  I had a five week break from training when I went on holiday and the problem has arisen since returning to training.  For a few months before my break I had been getting some tightness in the backs of my knees (where calf meets hamstring) but nothing that bothered me too much, I just put that down to the amount of running I was doing.  On returning to training I did 2 squat sessions (perhaps I didnít lower the weight enough) and thatís when the problem started.

In the past 2 months my right leg as swollen up and returned to normal 4/5 times and the same with my left leg, the stiffness at the backs of my legs always gets very bad when my knee is swollen and when the knee seems normal if I kneel down or bend my leg the stiffness comes back and I cant straighten my leg.  The weird thing is I have no pain or very little (the odd twinge) just get a lot of pressure build up, the problem seems worse when I sit at my desk all day.  I canít train my legs or do any running and that is a big part of my life!  The swelling seems to start on the outer part of knee and spreads all around the knee cap, especially the top but never on the knee cap.

Sorry for the long post but if anyone has any ideas of what my problem could be that would be great, not to sure what to expect from the nhs physios!?!?!

Thanks, Bill

Sounds like a overuse injury...very common if you take a longer break and then go onto it again in to too high levels.
The things which would help if this is your problem is rest as much as possible and maybe use antiinfammatories as well.
What kind of docs have you seen and what did they say ?
Would be interesting to hear their ideas.

I thought it was an overuse injury but i haven't trained my legs or run or do anything strenuous with my legs for 2 months now and the problem keeps coming back, i've iced them and that does little or nothing and taken anti inflammatory's (Ibuprofen) but that also does little or nothing.

I went to my GP and he just reffered me without saying bugger all! I did see a private physio but she was useless and said i have tight hamstrings and the swelling was just a coincidence! aaaaaayyyyyyyy?!!?!

I'm starting to think it could be arthritis or Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD), i also have some stiffness in my thumbs and little fingers!?!?

Blimey, this aint nothing compared to what you've been through!  :-[

If I were you why not try see a OS specialized on knees. If the problem is there always more or less.
Or get hold on your GP again and try get some answers.
You can't just be refered to a physio without knowing what's causing your trouble..I don't think that would solve anything in this moment..first proper diagnosis then treatment like physio, if that is the treatment you need.
What did the GP do with you..just look at you ?

Yeah true, but i assumed that the physio will look at me proper and give me an x-ray maybe? I thought the physio would diagnose me? but what your saying makes sense, perhaps i've been mugged off! :-\

My gp (like most i'v had) is pretty useless.  Just put me on the table moved my leg back and forth and said i'll refer you to a physio! that was it.

What is a os specialist, what does os stand for (sorry for the ignorance!) thanks

OS is orthopedic surgeon. I can't understand that your GP just felt some at your leg and didn't tell what's wrong..didn't you ask ? A physio works with helping you get strenght in your legs and show you exercises..sometimes treatment like ultrasound, accupunture and stretching are used.
Only a doc will refer you for x-rays.

Bill,

I saw a Physio first who told me to get straight into a specialist. Trouble is even with Private Insurance I had to get a referral from my GP. When I managed to get an appointment I told her what I'd done and what the physio said. She said she would refer me to a knee specialist and did I have one in mind....luckily I had looked up some details on the internet prior to going. She then said come and pick up the letter on Wednesday. At that point I asked her if she actually wanted to look at my knee! She said oh yes I'd better have a quick look...rolled up my trousers, nodded and said yes youve damaged that!!! They are completely useless!! However that said although a physio can give you advise unless they actually know what is causing your problems they wont be able to treat you effectively....I'd go back to your GP and ask for scans....I think the NHS waiting list for MRI's is months. Do you have insurance?

Damn, Damn.  I dont know why i didn't realise this before!  When i went to the gp i just assumed that he couldn't diagnose what was wrong and that was why he was reffering me, it just didn't click that a physio wont do x-rays etc doh!

I'll see what happens on Thursday and take it from there.  I haven't got private insurance and i sure as hell dont have the £ for it!

Damn knees, i've just come back from the gym (upper body) and it seems that just being active on my knee, moving around etc makes the swelling better! when i'm stuck at my desk for hours it really seems to be worse.  what i dont understand is there is no pain (apart from the pulling/tightness in the backs of my knee).  My legs dont really feel weak it's just the loss of range of motion due to the swelling.  If i was still doing legs i could understand why it was flaring up but it just happens on its own.  I dont know, but perhaps it's BECAUSE of i've stopped training legs that it's happening, perhaps i lost some muscle/strength in my quads and it's had an effect on ligaments or something, i dont know!

I'm going to stop whinging now as there are far worse of people than me on here and count my lucky stars i'm healthy else where!  cheers for the posts guys, it's appreciated  ;)

You can whine whenever you want to and need to..we are here to listen and help each other out.
Go back to your GP and ask for referal to OS (orthopedic surgeon) ASAP.if there's queue it's better as sooner you can.
Maybe also you should have them take bloodwork on you to see that there's nothing else going on like a rheuma disease cause you said you have problems with thumbs and fingers.
Can I ask how old are you ? Age can sometimes also be a factor in what's wrong or not.

i'm 30 years old.  Not sure about my thumbs and little fingers, it might just be all the gripping i'm doing in the gym!

Will defo do that, thanks for all your advice  ;D

I just remembered, i did say to the doc, is it bursitus and he mumbled a no but i dont see how he can come to that conclusion without a thorough and proper examination?  Honestly, when i go to my gp he makes me feel like i'm making it all up!  I dont think gp's are any good at all for such injuries, about a year ago i couldn't raise my arm above shoulder height.  The gp said i'd torn a muscle and i musn't lift anything for 6 weeks.  The following week i was back in the gym right as rain as i see another doc and she said it was just tendonitis where i had been doing too many pressing movements.  I learned from that and that's why i also dont think it is an overuse injury as i only squat 3 times every 2 weeks.  I did however think i used far too much weight after the break i had, so who knows!
