Pre-Operative HTO Questions I should Ask
« on: September 05, 2006, 02:18:34 AM »
Any ideas?  I asked on the wrong forum, so asking here.  This is my second surgery in 6 months.  First ORIF did not produce an acceptable result and left me with a 9mm depression in the tibial plateau.  I am meeting my new surgeon again on Wednesday of this week to go over questions, this time a HTO (open with donor graft).

Here are the topics I have:

Length of procedure (and the resulting anesthesia choices, epidural block v. GA)
Risk of infection from allograft/tissue bank, precautions for reducing infection risk
Type of locking plate for internal fixation (Tomofix?)
Likelihood of TKR, and whether HTO affects that prognosis
Type of pain medication (last time, Oxycondon/Percocet, Vicodin, Ambien, Torodal)
Type of stiches, how long in etc.
Icing machine in hospital

Post operative plan

CPM machine (last time used it 8 hours a day for several weeks)
How much PT, and when can I start
Swelling managment (icing machine)
Length of time to stationary bike (can I use a wind trainer for my road bike?)
ROM guidelines (flex and extension)
Return to work (last time, I went back after 2 weeks (last time twice a week in office and 3 days a week at home)
When next checkup, X-Rays
How long until I can ride my road bike

If you have any other ideas, I'd really like to hear them.  Thanks.
