Arthrosurface Hemicap
« on: August 28, 2006, 01:36:23 AM »
Does anyone know how large a lesion the Hemicap can be successful treating?  Mine is bigger than a quarter, and the only option they say left for me is a PKR.  I have no cartilage beneath my knee cap, but the rest of my knee is in pristine condition.

Many Thanks,

Alyce

I have the hemicap in my knee but I am sorry , I dont know the answer to your question. have you tried their website? www.arthrosurface.com That might be able to help you some. The lesion that my hemicap in was a small lesion that I was not even aware that I had. Doc put in a nickle size hemicap in the posterior section of my MFC. I have a much larger lesion that has been microfractured twice but is still doing ok as of now.
good luck

Missy,

Thanks for your reply.  Actually, I emailed the COO of the Hemicap company.  He replied"Our device is designed primarily for defects within and along the trochlear groove.  It largely depends on how far away from the groove your defects are located."

Mine is a lateral defect.  I'm just waiting to see if they can come up with something better than a PKR.

Warmest Regards,

Alyce

My defect was on the MFC , no where near the groove so what is up with that? I have not heard that before. weird huh? and here I am in the clinical trials, the president of arthrosurface flew in to be at my surgery so if my doc was putting it in the wrong place, I would think that he would have said something. have you looked at the website?

Missy,

He said he would forward it to the Regional Manager.  My lateral defect is kidney shaped, and on the lateral side.  I'm Grade IV, and hoping something will come along.  Maybe it was the size more than anything.

Frankly, after two failed surgeries, and more than 6 OS telling me anything would be a salvage procedure, I'll take the pain.  At least I can walk without a cane.

I just compartmentalize the pain, and do what I have to get done.  I'm not very hopeful.

Thanks,

Alyce

Alyce,

I have a lateral defect as well. I really want to get the Arthrosurface procedure before getting a PKR- that's what my surgeon says is my only option now. I have heard several negative things about PKR and I'm only 25 years old so it's NOT ideal! At first, my surgeon said I'm not a candidate for the Hemicap b/c I have a lateral lesion but I called the surgeon (Dr. Miniaci at the Cleveland Clinic) who has been teaching other surgeons how to do the procedure, and his office said they DO do the lateral hemicap, even if you don't have a fully functional meniscus. I can't figure out what to do ... I hate the idea of another surgery but I hate the pain too. I'm going to try the Euflexa injections and an unloader brace for a while but not sure how long that will last. Let me know if you hear anything that might be helpful for lateral arthritic conditions ... apparently we are abnormal compared to all of the medial arthritis in this world! lol
