Im new here.Operation this friday but w/a new injury
« on: July 23, 2006, 04:11:04 PM »
I had a meniscus repair done about 5 years ago. The repair lasted about 7 months . I believe a portion of the meniscus tore back off and floats in and out of my knee joint. Recently after 4.5 years of dealing with that it finally locked up somewhat for good. My Dr. reccomended to have it scoped this coming up friday and i agreed. Ive been really active this month rockclimbing and water skiing despite the pain, which is not that bad. Yesterday i overdid it . I fell on my ski and am sure i either strained or tore my MCL. I know that the MCL will likely heal, but im wondering how this new injury is going to affect my surgery coming up this week. I can walk today but any side movement is out of the question.Direct pressure to the MCL causes alot of sharp pain. Ill notify my Dr. monday morning . ::)
I was wondering if any of you might have comments on my recovery from this injury now that it is compounded. :'(
Thanx for any replies ;D

Perhaps someone can help me determine if i actually tore it because i think its just a severe strain.
I have not noticed any unstability. The MCL just hurts alot where it attaches at both ends. I can pick my leg up as in sitting cross legged as well with much pain . I figure if it was torn this would not be possible.
Hard to believe i did this new injury only6 days away from my surgery.Dark

It is possible that you may have to postpone your surgery, but that is a decision only your doctor can make.  I know someone who was waiting for a surgery until his MCL healed.  He injured his ACL, MCL and tore meniscus but the OS would not operate until the MCL had healed itself.

I would have thought that scoping your knee to sort out the tear wouldn't be affected by the mcl sprain or strain (I'm no Doc but just applying logic) unless you have a lot of swelling or instability.

I could see why it might affect an acl recon as you need as much stability as possible so you don't stress your new ligament but as this isn't what your having done.......

Well i have good news at least i think. The MCL is getting better really fast so i must not have torn it . Pain level has gone down about 50%.I cant walk very well on it but im limping .
Surgery for torn  meniscus removal is still scheduled for friday. ;)

Hope you're able to tell us about your positive outcome!  BTW I always tell the doctor and the anesthesiologist that I get nauseous from anesthetic, and I ask that they give me something in the iv before I wake up.  Hence no problems.  Hope this will work for you too.

Look at the knee picture on the home page.  The letters stand for the names of the ligaments.
