Crunching and grinding in left knee when bending it
« on: June 03, 2006, 01:14:10 PM »
Hi I am wondering if someone could please tell me what it means when your knee makes a grinding and crunching sound when you are going up stairs or bend it forward eg while doing squats.  It does not give me any pain but I am wondering if it is a serious condition?

Hi nia71,
I'm no doctor (I don't even play one on TV ;D) but it sounds to me like you've received a visit from "Arthur"! Arthritis that is. I have grinding when climbing stairs, doing leg extensions and squatting. None of which I can do without pain. I was like you and had no pain associated with it until I twisted my knee at work and tore my medial meniscus. I've had a Fulkerson Osteotomy (TTT) to unload pressure from that joint and the pain is starting to subside as I continue with PT. I'd check with my GP if I were you and see if he/she wants you to see an OS. It may be something more serious. You never know.

Take care,
