Horse riding accident.. :( Tonight
«

Hi everyone... well I was riding my horse tonight, and I had a bad fall. We took a bad fence together, and we both landed off balance. I tried to stay on.. but I didn't. I came off the right hand side, my left knee twisting as I went in the stirrup going over the horses back. IT came free as I was falling and I landed on my left knee. The pain in my left knee when it first happened, was extreme, I couldn't put any weight on it, and I held my horses reins to keep myself upright while I gathered my self together. The pain subsided a little and I was able to make it back to the barn. I couldn't get a hold of my husband or anyone else for that matter... and it really hurt. Anyway... it seemed to settle down, and I made it back to my house, but by the time I got to the front lawn I could barely stand on it. I'm in SO much pain now, I took 1000 mgs of Tylenol and 400 mgs of Advil, and lot's of ice and elevation.. but it's really painful. Mostly on the lateral side, but kind of everywhere too!
It's not super swollen but it's swollen some.. and it's throbbing. I decided to wait and see how it is in the morning before I got to the ER, but i'm thinking that was stupid as i'm in so much pain now.
What should I do?

OMG Linds,
So sorry you took a fall. I think you know what you should do - go to the ER. If there is any doubt, go. It seems like you are a bit unshure, always err on the side of caution. Please go.

Oh, Linds, I'm so sorry!
I really think you should go to the ER. It's better to be safe than sorry. I hope you feel better soon!

Linds, hope it has settled down or that you managed to go to ER.
I also hope that it's nothing serious with you.

Hi Linds ~ I can sympathize having injured my knee in a fall from my horse last year. Like you the initial pain was extreme but I managed to get my horse settled & myself home. Iced & rested but felt by the next morning that I'd done something serious to my knee so took myself off first to my Internist for pain meds. Was then scheduled for an MRI & referred to an OS. Major damage! Get thee to a specialist! Wishing you well...Ellie

Well, it's been about 60 hours since I came off my horse. Gosh it feels like weeks...
I didn't end up going to the ER, I ended up calling my uncle who happens to be an OS, and he suggested that I could probably take better care of myself, than the GP's in this small town where I live. It's not meant to offend anyone, but he is probably right. So i've had my leg mostly elevated and iced or my PTO brace on... when i'm not icing since Monday night when I fell off my horse. There is good news, and there is bad news. The good news is, the pain has settled down alot. The bad news is, if I spend any amount of time on my feet.. it puffs up like a marshmallow. As long as I stay laying down and up to speed with my ice and ibuprophen, things are reasonable.
For some reason, and I have yet to figure out why i'm terrified of my knee. I'm scared to walk normal, for fear... i'm not sure of what.. I've lost some extension so it may be that i'm afraid it will hyperextend sort of, i've had that problem post op before. Maybe it's my brain that's gaurding it.. i'm not really sure. All I know is, when i try to walk.. I limp even though i'm trying to walk normal.. you know what I mean? I can't tell if i'm being a wimp or if something is really wrong. Ohwell, it's only been 2.5 days... guess time will tell.
Anyway.. I have to go to Halifax this weekend for a bussiness meeting, so my uncle siad he'd look at it if it's still giving me grief. I'm going stir crazy as I haven't been out of the house since I fell of my horse, and normally i'm walking to the barn twice a day for chores and to ride and take care of my horse.
Gotta get outside today when my hubby gets home from work this morning. I havent' attempted stairs yet and i'm not about to do it alone.
Thanks for your support

Linds,
Sorry to read about your horse accident.
Understand what you mean about the healthcare....the public in general here just don't seem to understand that we are entitled to decent healthcare. I've had nothing but problems trying to get 'basic healthcare' at hospitals and GP's office since my knee surgeries. It is a black eye on this country......
Hope that everything is okay with your knee & rest, ice and elevation will ease the instability & pain. Take care and let us know how it all goes.
Sending hugs,
~Shade

Oi, I thought I was doing better, but then this weekend I was at my parents and spent some time actually trying to get around, and OUCH... now i'm back hom with the polar care on... thinking I better hit the doctor tommorow. My OS wasn't able to see me this weekend, he had to go out of town.
It hurts.. i'm a little worried.

On a positive note, the strength in your quads from riding probably helped you and/or it will help your recovery. The must ride horse gene will get you healed and back in the saddle as quickly as possible, just be careful. I'll follow your posts with great interest, because riding will be my #1 goal after surgery.

Thanks Ladies...
Donna, what type of surgery are you having? Just wondered... Thanks for your words of encouragement... my husband and I just bought a 195 acre farm to run beef and a horse program, so that is gonna put pressure on my need to heal. I thought it was getting better... until yesterday. Then I reliased I was just babying it so much that I didn't realise the problem.
Thanks Nettan, I know you are right, it might have just been too much too soon and i'm not giving it the time it needs to heal. But i've gotten to the point now where the calf muscles are all painful too, and i've been stretching them the best I can, but it's just a mess... think I need some back up.
I hate going to the hospital...
Thanks again, i'll keep you posted

Hi Linney
Oouchy ouch ouch ouch! Reading your first post gave me that horrible tingling sensation on my shoulders and down my arms!
I hope you are starting to feel better. It must be handy having an OS in the family especailly if your GP isn't the best in the world.
Having had knee problems myself for so many years, falls and injuries scare the hell out of me so I would encourage you to get it checked out just incase.
Congratulations on the purchase of your farm, how exciting.
Sounds like good fun hard work. I was just wondering if your horse is ok after the fall too?
Wishing you a speddy recovery and every success with your new venture.

Hi, you do have a lot of work ahead of you! Where is your farm? I'm having scope/LR. There's an MRI shadow to indicate a meniscus problem. My knee was hyperextended when a pack of dogs ran into me at the dog park a couple of years ago. It has been injected, and for 2 years I accepted the "you're old, and it takes time to heal," and "you have arthritis" from the GP. Finally in April I got a referral to and OS. Truth is that I am old and I do have arthritis, but I want to feel better :-) donna
