thoughts plz on mri results today
« on: May 02, 2006, 05:25:48 PM »
Hi
looking for anyones thoughts on my visit to the orthopaedic clinic today, the person i seen today is obviously not a surgeon as she stated she will "possibly recommend me for surgery today"

What does that mean "POSSIBLY", she had the mri scan results today on screen which she showed me, apparantly i have a cartlidge tear on the medial side and (this bit scared me ) some type of gangrine forming as well as wear and tear and fluid showing up from mri scan.

I have been told that they now need some more info from my gp on a previous orthroscopy carried out approx 4 yrs ago before absolutley confirming further arthroscopy is recommended.

From the reaction of this specialist when reading the notes from my mri scan "oh my goodness" she stated out loud when reading thru them, i feel that something has to be done to give me a better quality of life . I am mid 30 s and cannot go long walks or jog without significant pain.

Surely something must be done ? Apparently i have a follow up appointment, prob another 6-8 weeks, is this all normal process. I first complained over a year ago and this is the position i find myself now in.

The mri showed a cartlidge tear in the medial side, does this mean absolutley surgery is required? What is this "gangrine" malarkey? Should i be worried?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated

DancingBrave.

What kind of so-called specialist did you see? Gangrine is a serious infection. If you truly had it I can't imagine that ANY medical professional would not just 'possibly schedule you for surgery' and set a follow-up appt. for 6-8 weeks.

My recommendation is that you ask for a copy of the radiologist report from your MRI and ask for an appointment with a real OS. When you see the OS take the report and the films. MRI can be inaccurate when it comes to diagnosing meniscus tears. Plus, radiologists sometimes make mistakes when reading them, so better to have the OS take a look.

Best wishes.

The only thing I know for sure is that a medial tear will need surgery and you should have it. They only get worse in time and WILL NOT heal on its own. Only EXTREMELY tiny lateral tears on the red zone (blood supply) will heal with about 6 weeks total non weight bearing on crutches the entire time.

Hi, thanks for the responses. I am going thru the nhs and do not have a choice as to who i see regards my problem. I can only assume the person who has been dealing with me is expert in this field. This is the trust anyone would put in the national health service i presume. I am not sure if i can get a copy of the radioligists report on the mri or the images. The info i posted is wot i gathered from my consultation. I have been told for sure i have a cartlige tear in the medial side, wear and tear also, fluid, a word also used was gangrene. I thought gangrene could only be present from a wound which has become infected, how is it possible gangrene can occurr inside the knee?

i suppose ill just have to be patient and wait to hear from them.

Thanks again

Is it possible they said 'ganglion' rather than gangrene??

Ganglion is a type of cyst,

Good luck,

Heather ;)

Hi Heather,
yep you could be right. I was so uptight, i just sat there and listened to everything wot was said. Cyst does ring a bell, wot and exactly how does a cyst develop in the knee. how is it treated? why would she want a report on an arthroscopy 4 yrs previous before committing to the next step in repair/rehabilitation of the knee. Should i be more concerned with the tear in the medial side or the cyst, or even significant wear and tear in the knee. And the fluid ?   sorry for being so unorganised in my post, im just really concerned.

Thanks again

Im sorry, I have no knowledge of cysts i the knee, I just know that may have been what they said and you mis-heard, which is understandable in your situation :-[
I really cant answer your other questions either, maybe someone else can give it a go....or you can look throught the meniscus section where you will find plenty on meniscus and cysts.

Good luck,

Heather ;)
