Aaaggghhhhh It dislocated again!!!!!
« on: March 13, 2006, 01:59:18 PM »
Hi everyone :)

I have posted a few times on here and this time could really do with your help (pretty please)

OK in September had Elmslie Trillat.  Rehab was slow but i was in strengthening classes and nearly at the end of rehab.  I got the all clear to go back to dancing YES!!!!!!! But...... at the end of a class i dislocated my knee and ended up at the hospital sent home with pain killers and a brace.  PT started me on SLR etc but said because of wearing the brace i had lost a lot of muscle (which i'd just about build up) sniff sniff. So told be to keep wearing the brace for walking only.  Reading threads on this site i am now concerned as it seems the best thing to do is to keep MPFL relaxed so it heals.  Is this right?

I am seeing OS on Wednesday and i know he is going to be disappointed that i dislocated my knee again. He did say, before my Elmslie Trillat, that if that didnt work there was nothing else he could do...  Is this the case? Is there any procedures worth mentioning to my OS when I see him?  A bit of history. Had knee pain since I was 3, Have very lax ligaments, knee always subluxing (dont know if thats right terminology) Been with PT for god knows how many years.  Knee has never dislocated like this before not even before my surgeory!!!!!

Any advise before Wednesday would really appreciate it.

Take care

Becci :'(

Hi Bex

Nightmare! I really feel for you. I cannot however offer any useful advice as I am a procedure behind you. All I can say is get a 2nd opinion if your OS is of the opinion that there is nothing more that he can do for you and don't give up.

What sort of dancing do you do? I had to give up many years ago as my wobbly knees just wern't up to it. It broke my heart but that's healed now, just the knees to get fixed!

I wish you the best of luck with your appointment today, let us know how you get on.
Sorry I couldn't help.

Thank you for replying :)

I do all sorts of dancing, ballet, tap, modern, jazz, salsa, street.  I go to a class twice a week and have really goods friends there.  Only had TTT so i could carry on dancing so absolutely gutted.

Sorry to hear you had to give up dancing its such a shame to give up something you enjoy. I hate it.

Thank you for your support.

I have had the trillat TTT with VMO advancement and still have had a lot of problems with dislocations since that surgery. I don't know if this will help, bu this summer I am going to be having an MPFL reconstruction using an allograft (as my OS fears that my own ligament will stretch with time and cause the surgery to fail).  This is because my VMO advancement has stretched back out after the 2 times it has advanced leading to increasing problems with dislocation.  Hope you find some answers.  If your OS says there is nothing else that can be done seriously think about getting a second opinion.  I went to 3 OS before I found one that was willing to try and help stop my knee from dislocating after the TTT.

Amy
Dec 98 - R and L knee LR and VMO advancement
Dec 00 - L knee TTT
May 02 - R knee TTT and VMO advancement
Dec 04 - R knee screw removal
still too many subluxations and dislocations
July 06 - R knee MPFL Reconstruction

Hi Bex

I presume you're a Brit from the time you are posting etc? Tap and modern were my favourite, I did ballet and ballroom too, never tried street dancing but have seen it on the TV, looks like a lot of fun. My first ever dislocation was in a ballet exam! You can imagine the hoo har I created! Nervous girls waiting to dance looking at my mangled leg and listening to me screaming the place down could not have done much for their confidence, needless to say I failed that one!!! lol

What time is you apt?

Hey Hop :)

Yeah i'm a brit.  My appointment is midday tomorrow.  Really quite nervous!

I bet you were scared to death when you dislocated it the first time.  When i dislocated 3 weeks ago it was at the end of my dance class. Just finishing one of the dances. That had to be the worst one i have had.  I cried like a baby, got up wiped the tears from my face and said i was fine and that I would be in class on Wednesday. By the time i'd actually got out of the studio I could hardly walk. For some reason my dance teacher didn't think I  would be in on Wednesday :)

I love to dance, i can't say i'm very good at it but for exercise it's great. The Gym and swimming bores me! But looking at it thats the only exercise i'm going to be able to do  :'(

OK enough of feeling sorry for myself.

If OS tells me there's nothing more he can do I will have to get a second opinion. By the looks of it i have to change my lifestyle or change my knee.  Dont really want to do either.  Will let you know how I get on.

Many thanks

Bex

If your OS says he cant help you any more, then ask him if he knows of anyone who may be able to.  He should be able to refer you to the new OS himself.  Thats what happened to me when my OS couldnt find the answer to my knee problems.

Good luck tomorrow,

Heather :)

Really?! That has just made my day! My OS said he will try an arthroscopy but doesn't know what's wrong with my knee and so he may not be able to do anything to help. I asked what then and he just shrugged and said there would be nothing he could do. At which point I was left thinking I would have to go back to my doctor, get referred again, wait on lo-o-o-ng NHS lists (and then maybe end up being sent back to him)

Did you ask if he could refer you to someone else or did he suggest it?
I know there is a knee specialist in the same hospital as my consultant who specialises in knee arthroscopy, knee injurues, knee ligament something, knee replacement... knee everything and I WISH I could get an appointment with him!!

Sarah81, I went to my appointment prepared to ask to be referred for a 2nd opinion but didnt even have to open my mouth.  My OS suggested I see a colleague.  I really didnt want to suggest it myself as I was afraid of offending him!.
Its alot quicker to see another OS when referred from another OS than from your GP.
Good luck,

Heather ;)

Bex, good luck today, please let us know how it goes ;)

Hi Hop

Nightmare!!!!

Still have to keep my brace on and keep my crutches.  I asked him when I could start driving again and he laughed at me and said not yet.  He went mad when I told him Physio said I could go back dancing. As he would not have let me go back for another 6 months aagggghhhhh!!!!! Sing off the same hymn sheet guys!!!!!!

He has said that he can't do anything until my knee calms down (what ever that means) Put me on diclofenic and signed me off work for 3 weeks.   :'( He was annoyed that I was still at work and straight after dislocation i should have been at home resting it.

He hasnt actually told me what damage i have done but think i have pullet patella tendon and torn MPFL i think but its just a guess.

He said that he cannot say TTT was a failure 'yet'. Think he was keeping stuff from me . You could tell by his eyes, how he looked and when i told him stuff his eyes popped out on stalkes which makes me think it's not good.

I think i nearly flooded the hospital crying :)  i feel pretty crappy
