cat is back- 2yrs post TTT
« on: March 03, 2006, 01:56:34 PM »
Today marks the 2nd anniversary of my initiation into the TTT club. I'm celebrating by going to the gym. Blah. Seems I will never get a gym pass and it's getting SO boring. :P

Two weeks ago I had another MRI- supposedly a "fluid" MRI to better see the inner workings. Of course, the higher ups never really saw anything of consequence but at least no one said to my face that it's a head problem and not a knee problem. ;)

Anyway, my quad is not as it should be and supposedly, once I get it built back up, the knee will be up to parr. Sooo, the game plan is to wait a couple of weeks til the therapists get seminared by some guru from Duke on the nuances of patella femoral problems. Then I go to the enlightened therapists to get my routine tweaked. And then back to the gym. I am to do the exercises every other day. Fun, fun.

Y'all have a nice day and just ignore me. My ADD is just acting up a bit. ;)

Hey Cat! :-*

Grrrr about the stupid knee and rehab prognosis.  Hope they come up with something that will help!  Ya know, just thinking, up here we shovel alot of snow - great quad building activity........not that it helps those in the grain belt much, but maybe you could find a farmer friend and see if he had any shoveling for you to do ;)!

Hey Cat,

Sorry to hear you're having problems with your knee. It sounds like you've got a good plan though! Just out of curiosity, you wouldn't happen to know who the "guru" from Duke is, would you?

Good luck at the gym with your new exercises. I hope it helps!

cat,
do you still have knee pain? Just wondering what quad exercises you've been doing..   And are they not effective for some reason?
My TTT was 10 weeks ago, and my quad is the diameter of a baseball bat  :-\

Hey Tang,
Yes, I'm still having a bit of trouble with the ole knee. It's not subluxing, crunching, or grinding  and it doesn't keep me up at night. It's just interfering with some of my fun. Anyway, I feel like I've been doing a ton of exercise over the 2 yrs and not just quad exercises. (I've also been working on my hacienda and hips.) And I have seen some gains in strength and mass- just not enough apparently. I do the leg press, standing hip abductor machine and hamstring machine. I also do some step exercises- side step ups and dips and some proprioception work. And then I finish with 15-20 min on the elliptical. It's about an hour's worth of "fun".
Here's a link to what my routine used to look like- about 4mos post op if I remember right.-

Hi Cat,

Sounds to me like you're doing great, judging from the workout you are able to do.  :) I'm jealous!

Can you give me the info on the Duke dude?

All the best,

Nancy

OA both knees, confined to patella. Arthroscopy 1998, cortisone both knees,  Halygan shots both knees. Had PFR 3/28/05. Recovery on schedule according to OS but lots of pain radiating up thigh and to lower back.

Well, hey there Jim!
What happended? Did you find another irresistable pile of leaves? That partial didnt' last very long. You're kinda of hard on your parts. Maybe you should look into an extended warranty. ;)

Things are ok here. The Duke dude didn't pan out so I did another round of therapy but with the 'unenlightened'. The therapists concluded that the IT band and quads are too tight and the patella tendon too boggy. My knee got the full spa treatment- ionto, ultra, and tendon massage. I was back pedaled to quad sets and am now the proud owner of a gigantic white swim noodle that's not for swimming. (The kids have had alot of fun playing with it though.)  I see my OS's partner for a fresh look in a couple of weeks. Other than that, same ole same ole. My Land Roller skates come in this Fri so perhaps I'll soon post something more exciting in the broken parts section.  ;)

So when will you get the bionic knee? Will this super appendage lower your golf handicap?

Well, the partial is still doing pretty well, The problem now seems to be the meniscus is now worn. Looking at the x rays from last year to this year there is a promenint change in the gap between the femer & the tibia in the frontal view.  Its baffling to me how the meniscus or the femerol cartlidge could wear away that fast but it seems to be wearing.

All I know is the surgen can into the room and squeezed hard on the sides of the knee and asked "does this hurt?"    DUH!, after I climbed off the ceiling I said.......Uh Yea!

He tried cortisone but it's been 2 weeks and no relief at all.  lookin more and more like a total in the future.  I don't go back to the OS until the end of August so if things are still the same then I would assume the op would be in mid to late October.

I was thinking the other day that with all the opens I have had on this darn knee that a maybe they could sew in a zipper or a real small car hood for easier access.  Ya know if the thing started to hurt I could pop the hood and take a look around in there :)  :D  I am a do it yerselfer so why not .......

ow well, not much else to do at this point is to whine a little  ;D

Hey Cat!  Glad to see you back, but sorry that you are still hurting.

Okay, don't hit me, but...have you been seriously evaluated for post-op scarring?  Every word you wrote could have come out of my diary...boggy patellar tendon, strict adherence to PT but no quad build up, extremely tight ITB and problems from that...how is your ROM?  Especially extension--in weight-bearing poses or full-function situations?  Can you hyper-extend with weight on the leg?  Can you sit with legs bent to 90 degrees like in a car without pain?

A load bearing x-ray from the front, plus ones done with you on your side w/legs bent to 30 and 45 degrees, plus a sunrise or Merchant's view should show everything with respect to the position of your patella.  Unfortunately, scarring doesn't often show up too well on MRI's, it seems...I've had four, and it only showed on the last one.  And I think it only showed there because a) it was SO horrible and b) the MRI was done w/software developed by a scar tissue guru.

Damn, girl.  I sure hate hearing that you are still having issues.  You were one of my examples of smart folks who cut straight to the chase instead of messing around for years like I did.  Damn.

I sure hope your knee begins to feel better.  Other possibilities could be that you had some damage to the back of your kneecap that even unloading the patella with a TTT didn't help.

Whatever happens, keep your spirit up, from one bad dog--er, cat--to another.
