I just want to be normal again
« on: February 09, 2006, 03:16:26 AM »
Two years ago i was in a motorcycle accident and the motorcycle crushed my leg breaking my tibia and fibula clean off right below my knee. So far i have had 3 surgeries and i am going for my 4th next week. None of the surgeries has helped me. In my 1st surgery 3 screws were put in. Somehow my leg grew back crooked, Im not sure of the proper term but i have a crooked leg and as a rresult i have to wear an off-loading knee brace custom made for me. my 2nd surgery came about due to one of the screws had started to puncture through the skin of my inner leg. my 3rd surgery a t-plate with 8 or so screws was put in. since then the pain has only gotten worse especially in cold weather. since my accident i have had to take hydrocodone daily or my leg begins to swell and my knee feels like a rusty door. i hate being this way. i have a son who just turned two he was only a few months old when i had my accident- and i have missed his 1st two summers because of surgery. plus i am unable to run without pain or my knee giving out. the doctor told me that i would eventually have to have a knee replacement due to the fact that my leg being crooked has worn out my knee. i am 23 and i am scared to death that i will never be able to do all of the things i want to do with my son. i am also scared that the knee replacement wont work because my last surgery didnt help to straighten my leg. i just want some answers an explination or something or even what has happened to other people in my condition. i do not want to live my life depending on medication to be able to tolerate walking. and i am sick and tired of all of the surgeries. and i would really love to know why my leg is crooked. i just want to be able to be a good parent to my son and so far all of the surgeries and my inability to do certian things has made me feel like i am not as good of a parent as i could be. please someone respond sincerely.

Have you thought of getting a second opinion? I find it odd that your leg grew back crooked. Did they not cast it? Did they put the screws in with the leg crooked? I would definately get a fresh set of eyes on it.

As for the frustration, I totally understand. I was in a car accident almost 5 yrs ago. I will have my 8th surgery next week. I am in pain management and take morphine and other meds daily. I dont want to stay in this much pain either. Maybe we will both get better, you have to have hope. I am a mom but my kids are teenagers now. I still have missed running and playing with them since they were 9 and 12. It is hard to live with. WE all have days that it seems like it is too much to deal with but you will get thru it. You can always come here to vent. We understand and will support you.
Can you tell us where you live (you dont have to be specific), maybe someone could reccommend a different OS to look at your leg.
good luck

I would get another opinion. I broke my leg in 4 places 5 yrs ago. My fractures were on the distal tib -fib. I was casted in a full leg cast after closed reduction for 3 1/2 weeks. During that time the bones came apart. I ended up having an IM rod put down the tibia and the fibula plated. Two weeks post op, the dressings were removed and I immediately noticed my leg was crooked. I spent the next 6 mos trying to convince my OS it was crooked. Each time he said it was less than 5 degrees externally rotated. It greatly affected my knee and how I could walk. I got another opinion, first from a trauma OS. He measured me 40 degrees externally rotated. He said I would need the leg surgically rebroken to correct the alighnment. He sent me to a tib-fib specialist who also measured me 40 degrees externally rotated. He performed a tib-fib derotational osteotomy. Essentially, he removed all the hardware, cut both bones in half and turned my leg back to correct alighnemnt. He then plated the tibia with 2 plates and screws and left the fibula apart to grow a bone bridge. Long story short......I just had my 9th surgery because of my first OS's incompetence.

If I had not left this quack, I would be sentenced to a severely malalighned leg. There might be hope for your crooked leg with another opinion. The doc who was my tib fib specialist was located at our University med school hospital......not your generic residential office OS.

Sorry for hijacking your thread crookedleg, but this might be relevant

Do you by any chance have (and are willing to share) photos before and post-op? I'm especially interested in seeing the ones regarding the derotational ostoetomy. How long was the recovery time (again, for Derotational Ostoetomy) and .. you know please let it out on me.

I'd Very much appreciate your response,

Was it a Tibial Plateau Fracture (TPF)? Sounds like that to me!

Get a second opinion!!!! You're young, it should heal fine under strict surveillance of a good OS!

Good luck!
