Weak Knees

I have had weak knees since childhood, regardless of the shape that the rest of me is in.

I have always disliked stair climbing/ steep trails etc. because I feel a burn in my knee muscles and tire quickly. At the same time, I can walk at an extremely fast pace on level ground and never get tired.

A couple of years ago, it felt as if I had sprained my right knee after spending some time squatting and kneeling in my garden. It bothered me for quite a while to flex my knee or sit down/get up (particularly when getting into/out of my Miata). Eventually it got back to normal.

This fall, after bicycling for a few hours, my knees were tired, which is normal. However, after a couple of days, I realized that I had done something to reinjure my right knee. It was stiff and there was actually a little swelling/discoloration as if it were sprained.
i ended up having to wrap it with a bandage during the day and using heat rub on it at night. It's finally pretty much back to normal.

My question is, what exercises should I do to avoid future injuries and eventual knee replacements?

Hi, there are many exercises you can do to strengthen the knees, but you really should see a PT and get shown how to do the exercises properly before starting any exercise program.  Exercise bikes and pools are great for the knees also.....
There are sites like this one that show you exercises.
