I have a set of thought cards on my desk--and I pull one at random from there every now nd again--the one I got today says:

"When we try a little harder to live, to give, to care...amazing things start to happen."

I immediately thought of this board and the folks here who go out of their way to give kindness, reassurance, hope, and condolances to each other in times of need.  Kind of choked me up--glad to know you all...Sylvia

These are the lyrics to my favourite song by REM, and they have offered comfort to me through some very, very tough times over the past few years. I just thought they might help you too as the words hold such meaning and strength.

REM - Everybody Hurts

When the day is long and the night
The night is yours alone
When you're sure you've had enough
Of this life
Well hang on
Don't let yourself go
Cause everybody cries
Everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone
Hold on, hold on
If you feel like letting go
When you think you've had too much
Of this life
Well hang on
Cause everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts

Don't throw your hand
Oh no
Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone
No, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life
The days and nights are long
When you think you've had too much
Of this life to hang on
Well, everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes
So hold on, hold on
Hold on

Hope this gives you as much comfort as it has given me. :-*

Love.....Jo

Well I don't have any poems or quotes...But music is something that has always been sooo inspirational to me...Music has an amazing power over me and here are some so you may relate to that I personally find very inspiring. (This is my third time trying to post this!  My browser keeps quitting unexpectedly on me!!)

I Believe by Blessid Union Of Souls

Walk blindly to the light and reach out for his hand
Don't ask any questions and don't try to understand
Open up your mind and then open up your heart
And you will see that you and me aren't very far apart

'Cause I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way

Violence is spread worldwide and there are families on the street
And we sell drugs to children now oh why can't we just see
That all we do is eliminate our future with the things we do today
Money is our incentive now so that makes it okay

But I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way
I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way

I've been seeing Lisa now for a little over a year
She said she's never been so happy but Lisa lives in fear
That one day daddy's gonna find out she's in love
With a black man from the streets
Oh how he would lose it then but she's still here with me
'Cause she believes that love will see it through
And one day he'll understand
And he'll see me as a person not just a black man

'Cause I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way
I believe I believe I believe I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way
Love will find the way
Love will find the way
Love will find the way
Please love find the way
Please love find the way

The chorus to "You Gotta Be" by Des'ree

You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold,
you gotta be wiser
You gotta hard, you gotta be tough,
you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm,
you gotta stay together.
All I know, all I know
Love will save the day

This next song I find exceptionally inspiring.  It has helped me through many of my own self-esteem issues that are constantly plaguing me.  I believe it could be applied on some level to knee sufferers.  But regardless...It's an amazing song.

"Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera

Don't look at me

Every day is so wonderful
And suddenly, it's hard to breathe
Now and then, I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down
So don't you bring me down today

To all your friends, you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The pieces gone, left the puzzle undone
Is that the way it is

You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words won't bring you down
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words won't bring you down
Don't you bring me down today...

No matter what we do
No matter what we say
We're the song inside the tune
Full of beautiful mistakes
And everywhere we go
The sun will always shine
And tomorrow we might awake
On the other side

We are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won't bring us down
We are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words can't bring us down
Don't you bring me down today

Don't you bring me down today
Don't you bring me down today

Hey Rachel,

They are both beautiful and inspiring songs - thanks for
sharing them. Here are a few more quotes that I have found particularly helpful to me lately:

A pessimst is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities; an optimist is one who make opportunities of his difficulties.
Reginald Mansell

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
Eleanor Roosevelt

Bad things are not the worst thing that can happen to us. Nothing is the worst thing that can happen to us.
Richard Bach

I found another song...don't know why I didn't think of it before...It's by my all time favorite group, the Backstreet Boys.  It's a song that's called "what makes you different, makes you beautiful."  Technically it's a love song, but I'm showing my love for all of y'all out there :D!  Who cares if we have crazy, banged up, scarred up knees?!  We're beautiful inside!!!!

You don't run with the crowd
You go your own way
You don't play after dark
You light up my day
Got your own kind of style
That sets you apart
That's why you captured my heart

I know sometimes you feel like you don't fit in
And this world doesn't know what you have within
When I look at you, I see something rare
A rose that can grow anywhere
And there's no one I know that can compare

What makes you different, makes you beautiful
What's there inside you,  shines through to me
In your eyes I see, all the love I'll ever need
You're all I need
What makes you different, makes you beautiful to me

Hey, yeah yeah yeah
You got something so real
You touched me so deep
See material things
Don't matter to me
So come as you are
You've got nothing to prove
You won me with all that you do
And I wanna take this chance to say to you

What makes you different, makes you beautiful
What's there inside you, shines through to me
In your eyes I see, all the love I'll ever need
You're all I need
What makes you different, makes you beautiful

You don't know how you touched my life
Oh in so many ways I just can't describe
You taught me what love is supposed to be
You saw the little things that make you beautiful to me
Oh yeah, yeah

What makes you,
What makes you different,  makes you beautiful
What's there inside you, shines through to me
In your eyes I see, all the love I'll ever need
You're all I need, oh girl
What makes you different, makes you beautiful to me

Everything you do is beautiful
Love you give shines right through me
Everything you do is beautiful
Oh, you're beautiful to me

Much love to y'all out there! Don't know what I'd do without ya!!!

Hi Everyone,
WOW, what an amazing thread this is, I felt better after reading just a few of those quotes. I have had a rough fews days, piled up by pain and family problems so thanks for making me feel better!
I thought of my favorite quote that I live by on a daily basis.
" What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger" How true is that? We all think at some point we just can't take anymore pain, then we get through that and live to see another day!
Thanks for all the support!

Glad you found the quotes and things here helpful Heather...it's amazing  how uplifting saying, phrases and lyrics can be isn't it?

I mentioned elsewhere on this forum about the man I loved, Greg who was killed in a car accident but still provides me with courage, stregnth and inspiration everyday. Well, this is somthing he used to say to me a lot and still makes me smile and cry when I read it. It is incredibly poignant for me now, but I hope you like it and apprecaite it's immense feeling too.

I Wish You Enough

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.

I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.

I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Good-bye"

Love and hugs....Jo

I went browsing from the "bone breaks around the knee" site and found this gem thread.

This has always been inspiring to me:

And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our suffering, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given to us. Romans 5:2-5

xj, the Apostle Paul comes across as a misogynistic old coot with a penchant for being dead grouchy, but every now and then he wrote something truly beautiful.

I prefer the younger bloke "Love one another as I have loved you" is what I'm looking for and wish I could live up to!

These are great.

One of my favorite verses of poetry--something that gives me great strength--comes from a centuries old Persian poem by Hafez:

Though the way is full of perils, and the goal far out of sight
There is no road to which there is no end:  do not despair.

I love this verse.

Ross,

Yes, unconditional love is what we all aspire to give as HE did! And I know Paul was, shall we say a tough one, but Romans and Corinthians are filled will inspiring verses, e.g.,

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."
1 Corinthians 13:4-8

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 8:38-39

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romas 12:21

Yes, our knee injuries and their associated pain give us such grief, but they are so small compared to His glory.

P.S. Why do all Australians seem to have such a good sense of humor...is there something in the water down there? If so, you should export it to New York!

This following one makes you wonder:

If we could shrink the earth's population to a Village of approx. 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:

  There would be:
    - 57 Asians
   - 21 Europeans
    - 14 from the Americas, both north and south
    -   8 Africans
    - 52 would be female
    - 48 would be male
   - 70 would be non-white
   - 30 would be white
   - 70 would be non-Christian
    - 30 would be Christian
    - 89 would be heterosexual
   - 11 would be homosexual
    -   6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all would be from the United States.
    - 80 would live in substandard housing
    - 70 would be unable to read
    - 50 would suffer from malnutrition
   -   1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth
    -   1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education
   -   1 would own a computer

When one considers our! World from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent.

The following is also something to ponder...

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...you are more blessed than three billion people in the world.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

If your parents are still alive and still married ...you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada.

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

Someone once said:
  What goes around comes around.
Work like you don't need the money.
Love like you've never been hurt.
  Dance like nobody's watching.
  Sing like nobody's listening.
Live like it's Heaven on Earth.

Really puts things into perspective doesn't it.
Sharon
