Knee Surgery 1 Week Ago and want to play Football in 5 months
« on: December 30, 2005, 06:01:54 AM »
I had surgery on my knee Dec 22, 2005. My knee was hurt playing Minor League football almost 4 months ago. Prior to surgery my surgeon said that he saw nothing wrong in my MRI, he saw the tear, but nothing else. To his amazement when he preformed the surgery he couldn't find the tear, I was missing a piece of meniscus on the lateral side of my knee. The surgeon had explained after the surgery that he had find the piece of meniscus behind my knee cap, and said the piece was about 2.2 cm in length. He told me after the surgery that I would never play football again, and that if I did I would be putting my knee in serious jeporady. He also beleived that I'll have problems with my knee later on down the road. I'm a true beleiver that with prayer and physical strenghting I will be alright, but all I want from any one else out there is a vote of confidence from any one else that has gone through the same thing that I'm going through. I'm right now taking Glucosmaine Chorndtin (SP) I'm hoping that this will work, and help mee get on track for this season.

Hi,

It is hard to learn that something is going to hamper your sports, but a surgeon would not say this if he did not believe that doing so would jeopardize your knee further.
You could be at a higher risk for getting arthritis down the road and that is not something that you want....
Ultimately it is your choice.

Hi Buc, I wish I could give you a vote of confidence, but my experience and the reality of my research tells me otherwise.  However, I'm 49, with injuries from an amateur career.

If you know the risks in advance, at least you're armed with that knowledge. Potential arthritis is risky business....

You may want to get a 2nd opinion to talk through your options.

Nutritional supplements will not replace meniscus, but helps some people some how. I'm not quite sure how this works.

Here are some good sites for you:

and, the future of meniscus repair (not available in the USA)

good luck

torn RK ACL March 2001, surgery Aug. 14 2006, after 4 knee sprains since Oct. '05.  Allograft, ~40% medial meniscus removed, some wear in the trochlear groove. Everything else looks good.

Is it possible for you to look into a different sport?  Some times we have to adapt to new situations.  I used to hike a lot but now I can't do that any more.  I was devistated because hiking was not just my sport it was a very important part of my phycological well being.  My doctor recomended switching to swimming and bikeing.  I started swimming instead back in October and I'm having a blast with it....I love it!  I'm even looking into learning how to scuba dive...that sounds like tons of fun.  And my knee feels so much stronger since I've been swimming.  It's winter here so I have to wait until the snow goes away to start bikeing but in the meantime, I'm going to the gym every day and am working  out on a stationary bike.  Another question I have is that is there any chance of your making a career of football?  If there is relitively no chance of your being able to make a career of it then why risk an injury that could disable you for the rest of your life?
