I am currently in my second year(of a 4 year program) of a nursing degree program. I will be graduating in 2008. When i am done i am thinking pediatrics, but who really knows. My dad figures though that i will likely end up nursing a couple years, and i will want to go into medicine. I will never close any doors! Great Thread!!

I'm a freshman in college right now, but I'm hoping to be either a pediatric oncologist or an orthopedist. This site, my host of orthopedic problems, and my interest in sports have definitely developed my interest in orthopedics! For now, I'm concentrating on majoring in neuroscience and/or public health while fulfilling my pre-med requirements.

I am a general internist (primary care doc) in Boston.  One of my colleagues mentioned to me the other day that the AAMC (the body that accredits medical schools in the US) is going to be pushing hard to get US med schools to increase their class sizes.  This is to address the increasing shortage of MDs in the US (I know it's already hard to find a new primary care doctor in the Boston area, and that's going to get a _lot_ worse before it gets better).  Anyway, it may get somewhat easier to get a slot at a medical school in the US in the next decade or so, although it's a bit deal for medical schools to increase class size, so change will come slowly.

I work as a speech pathologist.  I work in a school system so it is not as medically related as if I were to work in a hospital setting.  Although, I am hoping to get back into the hospital setting soon.

I'm finishing my residency in general surgery this summer.  It's strange after 4 years college, 4 years med school and 6 years residency to finally be getting a real job.  It's exciting and a bit scary, too.  Sometimes I look at where my friends are now compared to where I am, and wonder what happened to my life.

Medicine in the US can be very tough with all the regulations and often the public's perseptions about physicians.  It's a rewarding career, but not one to be undertaken lightly.

???I am a nurse, I have been in the medical field almost all my life,  I really love rehab work.  I used to work with quadriplegics slot.  the toll of exercising, lifting, and walking, took a toll on me.  so I went to work in a nursing home two years ago, i thought it would be better, no lifting,  well I fell at work.  now my knee has had menisectomies, chrondralmalacia, oa, and I am having hip replaced in sept.  I love taking care of other people, now I feel like one of my patients,  i hope i recover quick and get to return to my love, nursing

um... i spent 23 years as a systems consultant and finally decided what I wanted to be when i grew up... I became a licensed EMT and am going to paramedic school at the end of this month...   it will take me twice as long to finish as other people cause I spend my winters in Arizona, but after i become a medic i would like to work either in a high call area ( Milwaukee ie..) or an ER...

no rush tho..
the guy whose knees have messed up his EMT stuff - I feel your pain ..   that is why I had the surgery... and am determined to get better... cause I need my knee...

I am just finishing my nursing degree and cant wait to finish. Was going to go straight from university to another course in midwifery but now need to take at least a year off for more surgery so not happy about that. Have been told so many times that I have chosen the wrong career because of my knees but not going to let them stop me.

I've been a paramedic for 14 years.  Hoped to get a few more years but??? We'll see after the January surgery if I'm in or out.  Hate to leave it - this is a job you have to love or it will eat you up.  So, after 14 years I guess I love it.  Wish me luck in January!  Deborah
