VERY SUCCESSFUL LR/TTT!!!!
« on: December 09, 2005, 06:10:18 PM »
Dear fellow kneegeeks,

WOW!!  I am siting here counting my blessings, and realized that I need to share my story since I last posted probably more than 6 months ago!  I used to be quite a regular here after having a LR/TTT on my left knee.  That was followed by a MUA/lysis of adhesions a couple of months later.

So, let me start at the VEYR beginning, so you all understand why I say "VERY SUCCESSFULL"!  I was an avid skier as a child - started at 3 years of age!  Around 12 years of age, both patellas started dislocating after a fairly traumatic whipeout.  Way back then, there wasn't much to do aobut it.  I continued to ski, and continued to dislocate/subluxate until I was 16.  I had so many inuries, that my patella would dislocate when I rolled over in bed.  So, I had a LR/TTT, VMO transfer and remodelling of the trochlear groove on my Right knee WAY BACK in 1981.  This was followed by casting and complete immobilization for 8 weeks.  Needless to say, PT was rough.  I had significant atrophy of what little quads I had, and a "frozen knee" that took nearly 2 years to get to full ROM.  I refused to have the other knee fixed, so I gave up skiing, and all other athletic activities.  No more dislocations, but no fun for most of my life, either

Well - fast forward to 2003.  I slipped on the ice, and had dislocated my Left knee.  Followed by severla more sublxations, etc., and I once again began that spiral down.  I was SO HESITANT to have it repaired, but my Doc. convinced me that procedures and rehab had really changed dramatically and that I really HAD to have the surgery.  So, in April of 2004, I had the LR/TT.  Once again, big scar formation and very limitted ROM, despite really hard work in PT.  So, my surgeon opted to consult with a arthrofibrosis specialist, and did a lysis/MUA.

4 months later, I was considered a success!!  Full ROM, walking very well, giong up and down stairs with no problems!  I continued to work hard to strengthen both knees!

To my surprise, I got pregnant just a couple of months later.  I was scared that all that hard work would really be stressed - but, to my delight, I had NO PROBLEMS!  NO PAIN!  I posted my news back then, believing that it couldn't get any better!!

I delivered a beautiful baby boy in August, and continued to actually progress, as far as my knees are concerned!! My son is wodnerful - silly, smilley, and full of life!

I suppose, the extra work involved really helped.  So, I got really brave.  My OS had giving me encouragement to try to ski again. But, I had been doubtful! My boyfriend was very encouraging and supportive, but I still had major reservations. However, after realizing that I could run up and down the staris in my home, I figured I could give it a try on the bunny hill - just to see.

Well - after a few days, I am back into my old form!!   I CAN SKI!!  I'm not brave to tackle anything hard yet, but I can do the intermediate hills at Arapahoe Basin (I live in Denver).

So - is this success or what!!  My secret?  Beliving in myself, being my own advocate with the Docs and PT, listening to the experrts and following their advice!!!  I also feel pretty darn blessed and just plain lucky to have had it work out so well - I know many of you have done that same, but continue to have major problems.

I wish you all luck and peace!  I wanted to share my story to give you all some hope!!  I know this site is a blessing, but it sometimes got hard to read all the horror stories - so I hope this brightens your view!!

Much love,

L.

Hi Hopeful!
It's great to hear you have your pain free  life back and you will need it will a toddler to chase around next summer! I too am looking forward to getting back on the ski slopes for the first time in 3 years on the 19th. I can't wait. My father even got me new skiis because  he knows how much I love it. I had my TTO  one year ago and I feel really strong. Ido not anticpate any problems and I was a pretty agressive skier before, but I rarely fell.  I plan  on postiong again after I come back from Mammoth.
Here's to a great season on the slopes!

Hey, Patti - I was living in MT until August - Bozeman to be exact!!!  I had my surgery there, as well!  I am glad to hear all went well with you, too!

And, Cheryl - good luck in Mammoth!  I am sure you'll be fine

Congratulations!   I'm sooo glad things are going well for you!  It's great to hear that you can SKI again (I moved from colorado 2 years ago).  Hope you're enjoying that baby boy & will teach him to ski as well.

I am back from the slopes and it was a sucess!! I was pretty scared. Took it easy and never fell. It sure felt good to feel the burn in my thighs again. The moguls were pretty rough - on my " other knee" which is now labled my bad knee-and I need to stay away from them.  I am starting a pretty extensive exercise program with a physical trainier to help get the extra wieght off so I will know if 6 months if I will need to get the other knee done as well.  Take care everyone!
