TKR - problems post op
« on: October 29, 2005, 04:27:53 PM »
Had TKR on right knee 20 September 2005 - walking next day, stairs day after and out of hospital with 1 stick and 100 degrees bend 5 days later. Doing really well and no pain until 4 weeks post op!!   Had severe allergic reaction(?) to junior aspirin , the doctors think, and ended up in hospital with severe rash and itching. Told not to take aspirin again for pain relief. 2 weeks later take paracetamol as pain now getting too bad, especially at night. Rash erupted again and GP not at all sympathetic or understanding. Gave me more Piriton for rash and asked me to stay off paracetamol unless pain becomes unbearable!  Have demanded allergy test as pain very bad especially at night and have to keep leg moving all the time. Unable to take any pain relief at the moment and pain is keeping me awake - persuaded GP to give me sleeping tablets so can now sleep for 3 hours a night!! Has anyone else experienced symptoms such as these and does anyone have suggestions as my 6 weeks are up next week and seeing consultant again.I would appreciate any help - I am still doing my exercises and can walk unaided for about 1 hour.

Hi

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain.

I haven't had a knee replacement, so I cant really say much about your symptoms, but I would go back to your GP and asked to be Referred to a pain management specialist, they can help you to manage your pain as use seem to be allergic to pain meds.

Good luck

There are certainly many drugs available to use for pain control that do not have tylenol or aspirin in them. IF you are not taking Coumadin, then try ibuprofen, or one of the NSAIDs, in addition, meds like codeine, oxycontin, etc, can be taken WITHOUT asa or tylenol. Good Luck, if the OS will not help try your family dr. and explain the situation. Teresa

Thank you for your comments and recommendations. I went to see consultant last night and he is very pleased with the knee and has recommended an allergy specialist for me to see. So off to GP to ask that I am recommended to him not a dermatologist.

Feel much better now with whole situation, as soon as allergy sorted hopefully I will be as good as new - well nearly!! :) :)

Hi

Sorry to hear about your problems.  I had a TKR on 23 Aug 2005, with a return to theatre on 27 Aug for them to remove the drain!  I had itching for about 4 weeks - obviously not as severely as you and put it down to the drugs I was on.   I am still taking co-codamol at night for pain, but I think in the last couple of days it has got much less, so will look at stopping them now.   I'm still not getting 3 hours sleep a night!!  In one go that is.  In fact I have 3 beds made up, so I can move from one to the other!  Apart from that I'm doing well.   Hope you are too.
