You know you've been on crutches too long when....
« on: October 27, 2005, 02:00:06 AM »
  • You need crutches to walk in your DREAMS!
  • You can fix dinner/go to the bathroom/etc without consciously realizing you did all that with crutches
;D
Any more examples?

You have two sets - One for when you are wearing shoes, and another for when you're barefoot!

When you go potty at night and have no problems.

oh this is great, I think I can relate to all of it!  Most surprising to me is on a day I can walk and people are surprised to see me without them.
I can do anything on crutches, cook dinner, serve the kids, go up stairs, I don't really even notice them anymore.  Yes, my are adjustable and the shoes i wear make a difference, I know by heart what setting for what shoes!!!

.... you seriously consider decorating them for special occasions!

(Like Halloween, Christmas etc)

Yes ... I am that sad! ::)

Have to say that I am very impressed with everyone's proficiency on their Crutches - I never learned how to Manage Stairs or function effectively on mine!

Mine were mostly used for picking things up, prodding the Kids and Dog, banging on the bedroom floor to indicate I wanted a cup of tea :P and occasionally Hitting people
(and there was that one memorable and very embarassing time when I had a really, really bad night and threw a major temper tantrum and beat the bedroom door into submission with them)

I'm hoping that I won't have to go back onto Crutches when I get my Operation done ....

You know you've been on crutches too long when...
-you've named them, and know which one is the right and which is the left!
-you have pretty covers for the padded parts (mine are purple fleece!!)
-you can offer to adjust the crutches of other people (one of the 6th grade students at the school I work at was on crutches and needed them adjusted-he was going to go to the nurse but I ran into him in the hall and told him not to worry, I could do it for him!)
Left knee:

TTT revision 6/03
screw removal/MUA 10/03
d/x with severe patella baja
7/05 patellar tendon replacement w/piece of quad tendon

Hah, how about:

You use them to push buttons to turn things on, like the tv or computer.
You can crutch and push a shopping cart.
You can talk on your cell phone while crutching.
For the horseback riders: You use a crutch instead of a lunge whip when lunging your horse... And it works better.
You know the difference between metal and wood crutches and have a preference.

and lastly, I learned this one the hard way..

You carry an extra wingnut incase you lose one while you are out.
-Fran

I've come to the conclusion that listing my laundry list of things that happened to my knee isn't what people here need. What we all need is a nice lounge chair on a beach, some Jimmy Buffet, and some fruity drinks... So we can all work on our brace tans. 8)

- when two of your three homecoming dances were spent in an immobilizer and on crutches.
- when people call you gimpy b/c you are never without them.
- when you decorate them with red and green ribbons for Christmas
- when you have friends/co-workers/teachers sign them. you can get more messages/autographs than any cast!
- when you "walk" faster with crutches than you do without them.
- when you wish you could use the crutches b/c they help with pain, but you're OS won't let you b/c your quads atrophy too much.
- when your friends get bummed when you don't have the crutches b/c they can't play "crutch and field 2004" and use the crutches to pole vault over couches, etc.
- when you don't get sore each "new" time you use crutches.
- when it's easier to push your way through a crowd b/c you can just hit people. haha. this was great in high school.
- when it becomes a good luck charm on your high school track team.
- when you look at them and feel at home.
- when, as a senior in high school, friends can't remember you ever off of them even though your freshman year was the only year you never used them. :)

that's all for now. great topic idea!

................you feel as though you have left something behind when you leave the house....you check your pockets, check you have the phone, check for keys....then realise the 'crippy sticks' are no longer with you!

................you can tie your shoe laces with the crutches.

................you can play a better game of pool/billiards with a crutch.

when you get really sad 'cos the Physio has confiscated one Crutch in an effort to wean you off them!

and you later find yourself sneakily searching through the Spare Crutch Bin looking for 'your' other half!

(this probably only works in the UK - where the NHS insist on on giving out Crutches only on a Temporary basis)
