Over use or arthrituus?
« on: October 20, 2005, 04:07:03 AM »
HI. I am new here

Well to start with I have been reading (on the internet) a lot, about knee problems, and just found this site. I have read quite a bit here but, I think my brain is going in overload, so I decided to regester and ask.

To start with I am 48, a equipment operator (20 yrs.), and a foreman (the last 2 yrs). after being a foreman and spending very little time in equipment for the past 2 years, I was needed to help out running a machine. It is a hard to describe machine and it was in need of a lot of adjustments which required a lot of climbing in and out. when this machine is in the work position it is not easy to climb in and out of.

I spent the first 6 hours adjusting and repairing, which from my rough estimate took a minnumum of 30 times of climbing into the machine. my total shift was 18 hours and the number of climbs was less per hour but, this operation requires a ground man and mine was new at the job, so there was considerable climbing for the rest of the shift.

At the end of the shift I was tired and no more sore than expected. the next morning  was a differant story. Both knees just above the knee caps hurt, and most of my muscles hurt.  I did some walking and took couple Moltrin. Three days latter the pain had lessened but not very much. It seemed like I couldn't regain my strength. by the ninth day I was considerably better but still had quite a bit of pain. So I went to the family DR. they gave me some sort of steroid pack which seemed to help. About a week after the pack was done some of the pain came back.

I feel as if the diagnosis of osteoarthritus was to quickly assumed, mainly because I do have a lot of muscle pain and it seems as if I can't build my strength back up. They basicly just moved the joints said it was osteo and sent me for xrays. They did say the xrays confirmed it.  I do feel there is some arthritus in the joints but, feel there is something more.

The DRs. want to do the arthroscopic, and I guess I am nervious and fear if there is somthing else wrong it may complicate it.

I would be thankful for any help, reassurance or info

Have you seen an orthopedist, or just your GP?

Make an appointment with a knee specialist.  Bring your x-rays, and insist on a full physical exam of the knee.  A good OS will manipulate the knee in lots of different ways.  What type of surgery did they suggest?  Arthroscpic is just the method or technique - there are tons of different proceudres performed arthroscopically.

Good luck.
ACI was supposed to be 2/21/06.  On 6/29/06 Insurance co said have another scope, and if it still looks good, they'll ok the ACI.

I hate to admitt how little I know of the medical perfession, but it is very little

On his card it has his name and (M.D.)

He advertises a Arthritis Clinic

What should I look for?

As far as the disciption he gave me (I should have wrote down what he said) he would use the scope and scrape the membrain. sorry for the lack of termanoligy. I will call the office and see if I can get the info.

I am not doubting that there is arthritis in my knees and shoulders. Also the pain is not that bad as of now. I am not that good at describing my situation but I can't find anyone who will look past the arthritis. I feel the arthritis pain that I do feel is caused more from poor strength or stamina, and I can get the DR's, to admitt having poor strength in the quads would tend to aggervate the arthritis. The specialist I am seeing  has stated a strengthing program before the surgery seems to help. but the more I do the weeker I feel.

To me it just seems there is more to my problem. I feel week and lazy, even when it comes to doing things I love to do. The pain always seem to come on in both knees (and muscles on both legs) at the same time and the level of pain seems to be equal and the pain disapates about the same. It may be as simple as nutrision? the other thing I can sometimes sit for hours and get up and walk around with no pain go right back to the chair I was sitting in and in 20 minuits my knees are in pretty bad pain. when I get up I have a difficult time straiting my legs but the pain doesn't really worsen.

I am sorry for my spelling and I am thankful for all info I can get. I will probubly have the Arthroscopic done but would like to make sure I do everything I can to help make it go as smooth as possible

Well, a doctor that runs an arthritus clinic is going to pretty much stick with arthritus. You need to see an orthodpedic surgeon that specializes in knees. I too have arthritus in both knees but my right knee and my left knee hurt differently and do not cause muscle pain. Osteoarthritus should also not cause overall fatigue. RA might but OA does not. You need to see a specialist.

It could also be some other medical condition. The first thing that you need to do is see a knee specialist to rule out an injury. You may also need to see a doctor to see if you have some other medical situation going on. The fatigue and combination of muscle and joint pain all together sound odd to just be an orthopedic problem.
good luck

I agree with Missy.  You need to see an orthopedic surgeon specializing in knees, and you may need to see your regular family doctor.  The fatigue and muscle soreness are not typical of osteoarthritis.  There are a number of diseases that can have the combination of symptoms you're experiencing, and you want to confirm that you don't have any of them.  I think most can be determined from blood  tests - rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and lyme disease all come to mind.  I don't mean to panic you.  I would just hate it if you needed help, and didn't get it.

As far as your "Strengthening program" making your joints and muscles hurt more - you may need to start out with formal physical therapy.  They can teach you sepcific exercises aimed at strengthening specific muscles, and make sure you are doing them properly.

To find the right doctor, you can check the main site here for referrals.  Or call your family doctor and ask for names of some local orthopedists, ask friends and co-workers if they've seen someone they like.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I have been to my family DR. and he has run a bunch of blood test, all came back good except one colesteral, which should have nothing to do with this? As for theropy I have just started it, and my theripist seem to be listening to me the best.

I will seek an orthopedic sergen tomarrow

Thanks agian.
