Seeing new OS tomorrow....
« on: November 03, 2005, 05:06:11 AM »
Just wanted to let you know that I have an appointment with a different OS tomorrow. I am VERY leary about it, as he is a BACK , not a KNEE specialist.I spoke to several of my workmans comp people about this and they insist that they could not find a knee specialist near me who accepts workmans comp. I am about at the end of my ropes. But I will see what tomorrow brings. Will post when I get home....Keep your fingers crossed for me that this isnt a total disaster....Thanks...DONNA

DONNA, sorry you couldn't get a knee specialist as you should need that, but I keep my fingers and toes crossed.

Donna,

Maybe this OS could recommend another OS that is a knee specialist - whatever works!!

Good luck and fingers X'D,

Hello everyone....Well, my appointment wasnt as bad as I thought today. (other than getting lost in Pittsburgh and being an hour late...LOL) Im not a city girl. Anyways, turns out the OS is, in fact, a knee specialist.  Heres the scoop. He did an x ray of both knees. The left one (bad one) is definitely not sitting in the patellar groove. The right one isnt sitting properly either, but its not misbehaving as of now, so...... we wont go there.I have a patellar tilt, as well as am knock kneed. I also have chondromalacia patella. This doc says the success rate with a lateral release is 85%. My present OS said he has seen too many failures with it done alone. Both of them agree that I should give it another 6 months and see what happens. No squatting, careful on stairs, no ladders, no kneeling, no lifting more than 25 lbs. Just exercise it at home and try to do as many of my normal activities as I can. In 6 months, the OS I saw today said, if its not better, than he would recommend doing a lateral release with a reconstruction of the kneecap. Anyone had this done??He also said that if it hasnt responded by now, it probably wont, but it is recommended to give it significant time to allow it to correct itself before operating. Workmans comp called me as soon as I got home. We had a long talk. They really have been pretty good with me. I am thankful, as I have read many horror stories on here. Anyways, she said that if I am comfortable with the new OS, that she would simply cancel the appointment with the old one, and wait till February and then go back to the new guy and see what he recommends. I am still thinking about what I should do, but at this point, this may be my best option. I just want to feel better. On the other hand, if there is the slightest chance it might get better nonsurgically, then I think its worth the wait. What do all of you think? I would love to hear your opinions.....

hugs....DONNA

DONNA, I'm glad that the appointment went well and that he really is a kneespecialist. So you got lost, it's easy done..hehehehe. At least you got there. I have no ideas about LR as I haven't done it, but the waiting for a half year to try see if it's get better and if not having surgery then sounds like a good idea.
You have to talk with all LR people on the board and get their opinions on this.
Anyway good to hear about this.

Donna,

So far I like what I am hearing..... he did say that an LR alone would not help you - he said LR plus reconstruction..... that means that he is going to try to balance your kneecap on both sides (it sounds like that to me anyway).  This is good news, take it easy for the next six months and do as the OS says....

So glad to hear that you have finally been to see someone that understands your knees and did not just dismiss you..... This is a good day, indeed....

Hang in there,

Shade

Shade and Nettan....I do definitely feel better. Now I just have to learn patience. Lol. And I am glad that neither doctor is knife happy. Thats good to know. Overall, it turned out to be a good appointment. My regular OS has never showed me my x-rays. This guys did. I liked that as well. That way I can learn about my problems first hand. I  hope both of you guys are doing ok. Have a great weekend, and thanks so much for all of your support....

Donna,

So good to hear that you have some confidence in this doctor.  It is also nice to know that he is a knee specialist - it definately took a long time to get steered in his direction - so you have already proven that you have a lot of Patience.

Good luck with your exercises.

Hey Donna,
Glad to hear your appt rocked, thats awsome! And that he DID turn out to be a knee guy :D You have nothing to loose trying to get it beter non-surgicaly, so Id go with that before having the LR done. Maybe he was talking about doing an LR and MPFL recon?? Anywhoo, glad you appt was great!
