What should I be asking/ checking? Please help!
« on: October 01, 2005, 08:09:44 PM »
Hiya

I posted on here a while ago about my left knee which dislocated in 1990 with torn cartilege. I am now 31 with an 11 month old and my knee has started to really play up. Some background....... I was misdiagnosed for 5 weeks at the outset so was weightbearing on my dislocated knee. When they went in to repair the cartilege they found the dislocation and had to shave (?) the back of my kneecap (they gave me the shavings back afterwards - cute eh?!) as it was mashed up after the walking I had done I guess.

It is getting harder to walk up the stairs as it is painful and makes a dreadful crunching sound. At my Drs. request I have tried Voltarol for a month which helped the pain a bit but not the crunching. It wasn't consistent relief and I could still jar it. The Dr. has now said that the joint seems quite stable but may be misaligned slightly or he mentioned arthritis. I am now trying to lose some weight as I know this doesn't help.

I have been referred to a consultant Orthapaedic specialist and have had an xray done (although the Dr. was fully appreciative of the fact that this will only show bone and not soft tissue damage. My question is................ what should I be asking the consultant and what should I look out for? My Dr. said that he would send me to a knee specialist but looking on Dr. Foster (a brill NHS check website in the UK) it says his specialisms are upper limb and shoulder! On closer inspection he IS the clinical director of Orth. and Trauma so....... I will go and see........

Any advice/comments would be appreciated...........

Thanks guys

Hi Itigo,

Hope you are not in too much pain/discomfort with your knee. Your knee should not be crackling or crunching the way it is but you probably haven't done anything serious.
To see soft tissue, you could ask your consultant for both an MRI scan and ultrasound scan. Then if one scan comes back clear, the problem may be picked up by the other.
It may be worth asking to be referred to a consultant who specialises in knee joint surgery. Then whilst waiting to see him try to think of any questions you may have. Write em down so you don't forget.
My situation is similar in as much as I am also 31, with a 13 month old son. I dislocated my left knee in 1988, and during an arthroscopy and lateral release, Ihad the back of my kneecap scraped out. Had loadsa minute fractures put into into to help the bone "regrow" to thicken it up. This didn;t work and since then I've had more major surgery - Fulkerson Osteotomy and Stabilisation. That's not to say that you'll have to go through the same treatment but something I'd recommend is to stayt away from surger if you can.
Try every other option first. Only go for more surgery of all alternatives have been exhausted.

Keep us posted. Take care,

Laura.

Wow! It is bizarre that our intial details are so similar! Thanks for replying. I am so going for every other result except surgery. I am only just getting good at blood taking after the baby! I am a real wimp and the thought of MRSA isn't too appealing either. I am glad that my Dr. is taking it seriously though. I think I should've mentioned it a while ago though! I'm sorry that you've had trouble with your knee. I have started a regular gym programme that concentrates on flexibility, weight loss and leg strength without pressure and need to lose about 4 stone (I have just realised the damage I have done myself from being overweight). I have a year and a bit to shift the weight before I want another bambino (although my hormones are screaming NOW!)

Thanks again for replying......will let you know how I get on.
