Arthro Fibrosis along with total knee revision
« on: September 20, 2005, 03:36:37 PM »
I reside South of Pittsburgh PA--in a town called 84 PA--home of 84 Lumber... :)
My problems started 40 years ago--impersonating an athlete in HS and College sports..
5 Knee surgery's including TOTAL reconstructive surgery prior to a TKR 31 Jan 2005..
March 2005 -- back in to remove the Arthro Fibrosis followed by an agressive PT program..
May 2005 back in for an MUA.. All unsuccessfull..

I wear a CDS (Controlled Dynamic Strech) brace and sport a cane..
I have a Negative 32 degree contraction that appears to be frozen solid.. My PT's have given up...

My OS has a strong background in TKR--but suggested his partner do the revision.. It's going to be a tenous process (im told)--
I'm back to work now, mentally trying to prepare for round #4.. My pain has been incredible. Im wondering if there are any good Arthro Fibrosis doctors who could operate on me-- prior to the revision.. I have my own business and cannont afford another 6 months off..
Does anyone know of a good doctor in the Pittsburgh PA area or in the surrounding metro area?
I'll look forward to some needed advise..
Thanks much/Bob

Sorry you're having the problems with Arthofiibrosis with your TKR.  The cloeset OS that has some expertise in arthofibrosis would be Dr frank Noyes at  This link should take you there.

You may want to check out the soft tissue healing problems below for information.  There are a number of knowledgeable people who post regularly.

Good luck!

There is a person posting in the Arthritis:TKR section named Jan L. who has been dealing with similar issues. She did a ton of research about revision vs. arthrofibrosis surgery along with revision. She has an OS at the University of Michigan who is helping her deal with her very difficult situation. I strongly suggest you pop down to that section of the board and post there, or send a private message to Jan L.

Torn quad tendon repair & VMO advancement 4/99, MUA with LOA 10/99, Patella baja and arthrofibrosis, LR & medial release & LOA 5/01, LOA & chondroplasty 6/03,TKR on 11/06, MUA 12/06. From perfect knees to a TKR in 7 years, all from a fall on a wet floor...and early undiagnosed scar tissue.

There is a knee replacement forum called delphi forums onourfeet/jointreplacement....type it in your search engine. When you get to that site , type in "revision list" in search. When you get to the list , at the bottom ,click on "full message" to view complete list. They have compiled a list of knee revision specialist around the country. There are some listed in Pennsylvania and New York. If you are needing a revison , you want a doc who specializes in revision and has done many. Check out the TKR forum it has been most helpful to me.

I do agree with Rozzie on Frank Noyes being an excellent athrofibrosis specialist located close to you. He did my TKR in January. I am having scar tissue problems  ( again) and he is doing a scope and open surgery in January to address that problem. I couldn't be more pleased with his care, but you sound like you need a revision specialist.
