Patella problems
« on: September 19, 2005, 05:58:29 AM »
Hi everyone, so glad I found this site!

I'm female in my 40s, and I had Osgood Slatters as a child/teenager. I still have the bump and it occasionally aches, but it's more an annoyance than true pain. On the same knee, I broke the kneecap (I think it was just cracked, not broken in two) and wore a cast for several weeks. That was about 15 years ago.

In the last year or so, I've been having problems in that kneecap. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it burns like it's on fire. I also must confess I've cracked the kneecap on the edge of my desk a couple of times, but not hard enough to break it.

So I have this lump on my kneecap and if I press on it, it hurts.

I know I can't get a diagnosis online like this, but I'm just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone, and if I should bother my doctor with it. I live in the US in an area where drs are in short supply and it's hard to get in and see her. Additionally, osteo specialists are difficult to get in with because a couple of them recently died/retired.

If it's just arthritis from the original break and there's nothing that can be done, i don't want to mess with it, but I'm wondering if there's something that could be done.

Thanks for listening,

Ang

Hey Ang !!

Could be so that you need some smoothing on the edge of patella. Maybe you have a little piece nagging against the soft tissues making them to swell. I would definately try see a Orthopedic surgeon specialized on knees to prevent further damage in future.
