Old knee problem resurfacing - help!
« on: September 09, 2005, 10:39:11 AM »
I am new here and thought I would just ask about my knee and if anyone has had a similar experience, or can shed any light on my problem I would be really grateful. When 16, I dislocated my knee and tore the cartilege. It was misdiagnosed which resulted in me weight bearing for 4-5 weeks as they said at the ER that I had strained the ligaments. When I saw another Dr. he realised I had torn the cartilege and sent me straight up to a specialist who did an arthroscopy. Whilst doing this, they found the dislocation (I suppose my knee was so swollen they couldn't see before?). Because of the weight bearing, the back of my patella was mashed up, so they shaved it to smooth it, and removed the torn cartilege. I walked out that day!

It has been ok since, a little delicate and getting a bit more crunchy (losing weight now) as I have got over, but no pain really apart from the occasional jar. I have recently had a baby (11 months) and since the end of pregnancy till now, the crepitation (right term?) has got much worse, to the point where my husband won't climb the stairs with me because of the noise! It also hurts climbing or descending and is much easier to jar. Went to my Dr. who has me on Voltarol (NSAID) for a month. The pain nearly goes, but the noise is still there and I am worried about what is going on in there! He has said the next step will be cortisone injections into the joint (not a good thought) or referral to the specialist for xrays etc. I know that the Relaxin hormone from pregnancy will have had its part to play, plus my weight. I need to get this sorted and would like any pearls of wisdom you guys may have.

Thanks in advance......

Itigo,

Congrats on the baby......

I would not let a GP give me a cortisone shot in my knee before seeing a specialist.   GP's just are not knee specialists.

Hopefully your OS will be able to sort this all out and that there is not much wrong inside your knee.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks - I will keep in touch. Am in the UK so there may be a delay as waiting times for specialists here can be quite long. My Mum was told there is an 18 month wait in her area! I hope not in my case.......

Itigo ,see a specialist first, Os specialized on knees, before you take a cortizoneinjection.
I have never got cortizone from a GP in my joint only from OS, and do believe that's better.
It can be so that you are worse now due to the pregnancy and get better as time goes by, but better check it out.
When I had my first one I developed problems in my joints not due to weight, but because of hormones.
It got better after 2 years.
Good luck with knee and baby !!

Thanks for your message, comforting to know that it may still be the hormones - not having no. 2 for a few years so hopefully will get it sorted before it all starts up again!
