Knee Pain
« on: September 05, 2005, 11:21:50 PM »
Well, I am totally new here but I wonder if anyone else has ever had or heard of my problem.
June 9, 2005 -- walking on flat ground, something internally spontenously ruptured in my leg.  I had a bruise the size of a baseball. They said no blood clots but it was a varicose vein that rupture.
I had to wait 2 months to get seen by a vascular surgeon who said my pain was unusual.  I haven't been able to work all summer (farming) or do any  housework due to my pain.
as of Aug 1, they sent me to Physical therapy.  At this time, my leg couldn't bend well.   They put me on Crutches for 2 weeks.  By the time, they started to have me put weight on it and a cane, I went back to  my pre-therapy pain.  So I have been on Crutches for another 3 weeks now.  I have been seen by a vascular surgeon who says it's not his problem but come back if nothing gets done.  a Rheumatologist who said it's not her deptartment.  She thought I had Behcet's disease although I have the symptoms, she said I don't.  I went for a MRI at the end of MRI and they said I had a partial torn ACL but the orthopedic surgeon said the MRI was wrong.  He couldn't find anything but put a cortizone shot into my knee 4 days ago.  It hasn't worked yet.  He said it should today or tomorrow.
I feel the victim of Misdiagnosises. The specialists are done figuring it out.  I am not sure what's wrong. I just want to stop using crutches and be pain free.  I have been told to go back to my local  MD and ask her what's wrong (I started with her after the emergency room).  I was also told to take 12 unpaid weeks off of teaching which started last week.  I
am in so much pain it keeps my awake at night.  The pain only hurts my right leg (the left side of my right leg) at, above and below my knee.  The  more I use it through the pain, it goes down my calf and into my ankle.  It also goes across my knee and once in a while behind my knee.
Hope someone can help
Susan

Have they checked your veins by a doppler to see if nothing still is wrong in your leg ?
Cause if everything started out with that and you still are in pain and haven't any kneedamages, there still must be something wrong with it. Begin this to start with. And if that doesn't help go see a second or even third OS specialized on knees due to that the Mri showed a partial torn ACL. I can't understand why the doc says that the MRI didn't show anything if there were a tear.
Good luck to you !!

I had the doppler.  I just have one varicose vein (my orthropedic surgeon, "I saw the vein on the MRI and it's squiggly")  My vascular surgeon said he would be glad to take care of it once the other doctors find what's wrong... "obviously this is very unusual and varicose veins don't cause pain like this"
The cortizone shot hasn't kicked in yet (that was Friday morning and now it's Tuesday night)... If I walk without crutches, I feel a ripping sense in my leg (inside below my calf)

Susan, if you are able go get a second opinion by a OS. I don't believe when the doc says that the vein can't cause pain. I have had people surrounding me with vein problems who has had awful pain and I can't believe why the doc can't fix it now.
I hope you find a answer to your pain soon.

My orthopedic doctor told me he was done with me and said go to vascular.  Vascular said he was done with me and go to Pain Management  (to get some shots in my back so I don't feel the pain anymore).  I'm 26.  That's not good enough for me.
Today I have 2 appts scheduled on Sept 30th at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphai.  One is with a vascular surgeon and the other with an orthopedic surgeon.  I tried the University of Pennsylvania Hospital but they won't treat a patient with severe pain and no firm cause (diagnosis) of it.

Good luck to you today Susan.
Hope you finally can get some answer. I can say that I shouldn't accept going to painmanagement either before knowing that I have done all I could.Let me know how it goes.

My appts are in 3 weeks from today... I did feel well enough to drive to work (60 mins round trip).  I was getting around a bit better however I wore myself out.  My chiropracter helped take the strain/pressure off my knees by getting my hips alligned.  The physical therapist is terrible at it.
