Let's compare our Hypermobile scores

1) REVISED DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR THE BENIGN JOINT HYPERMOBILITY SYNDROME (BJHS)

Major Criteria

A Beighton score of 4/9 or greater (either currently or historically)

Arthralgia for longer than 3 months in 4 or more joints

Minor Criteria

A Beighton score of 1, 2 or 3/9 (0, 1, 2 or 3 if aged 50+)

Arthralgia (> 3 months) in one to three joints or back pain (> 3 months), spondylosis, spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis.

Dislocation/subluxation in more than one joint, or in one joint on more than one occasion.

Soft tissue rheumatism. > 3 lesions (e.g. epicondylitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis).

Marfanoid habitus (tall, slim, span/height ratio >1.03, upper: lower segment ratio less than 0.89, arachnodactily [positive Steinberg/wrist signs].

Abnormal skin: striae, hyperextensibility, thin skin, papyraceous scarring.

Eye signs: drooping eyelids or myopia or antimongoloid slant.

Varicose veins or hernia or uterine/rectal prolapse.

The BJHS is diagnosed in the presence two major criteria, or one major and two minor criteria, or four minor criteria. Two minor criteria will suffice where there is an unequivocally affected first-degree relative.

2) The 9 Point Breight Scale is as follows.
* thumb to forearm (1 point for each arm so possible total of 2),  
* Elbows Hyperextending to 10degrees or beyond (ie bend backwards 10 degrees or more in the wrong direction) (1 Point for each arm for a total of 2 points);
* Palms flat to floor with legs straight (1 point)
* Knee hyperextending to 10 degrees or beyond  (1 point for each leg for a total of 2 points);
* bending little fingers back to 90 degrees or more (1 point for each hand for a total of 2 points)
For a total of 9 poitns. a score of 4 or 5 or more is indicating of Hypermobility.

5 Minor

c) Marfanoid habitus (tall, slim, span/height ratio >1.03, upper: lower segment ratio less than 0.89, arachnodactily [positive Steinberg/wrist signs].
d)Eye signs: drooping eyelids or myopia or antimongoloid slant.
e) Varicose veins or hernia or uterine/rectal prolapse.

2) 8/9 - I cannot do the touching the floor.

Just for a bit of background I'm in the process of finding out which connective tisse disorder I have -  EDS VII or Marfan.

I score 2 major criteria:

a) A Beighton score of 4/9 or greater (either currently or historically)  

b) Arthralgia for longer than 3 months in 4 or more joints .

And I also have 5 other minor criteria:

a) Dislocation/subluxation in more than one joint, or in one joint on more than one occasion

b) Soft tissue rheumatism. > 3 lesions (e.g. epicondylitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis).

c) Marfanoid habitus (tall, slim, span/height ratio >1.03, upper: lower segment ratio less than 0.89, arachnodactily [positive Steinberg/wrist signs].  although I'm not typically Marfanoid stature, I'm only 5ft I do have a marfanoid habitus having long limbs and digits, a positive span/lower segment ratio, the steinberg signs and other defining charateristics too

d) Abnormal skin: striae, hyperextensibility, thin skin, papyraceous scarring.  

e) Varicose veins or hernia or uterine/rectal prolapse.  I have several veins becoming varicose on my legs now

With the second test I score a 9/9

By the way just as a side note AC you wouldn't be able to count the arthralgia minor criteria as you have specified it in the major criteria. The minor is for people that haven't experienced arthralgia as long or in as many joints as the major criteria states.

I think I have 2 Major and 2 Minor (skin and sublaxations).  I also score an 8/9 on the other test.

Hmmm, you have a point there AC - I'll have to look into whether you can imclude it on the back pain grounds as it would certainly be included inmy minor criteria too as I've suffered from back pain for several years.

1st the reasone back pain isn't including in the major arthralgia criteria, is due to the fact that I believe most people with arthralgia have back pain. So it is actually covered in a round about way as arthralgia is simply musculoskeletal pain.

Now for me;D

1) Beighton Scale
2 Major
3 minor (subluxation /dislocations, Soft tissue rheumatism, Abnormal skin)

I also have the positive wrist sign; Height about 172cm or just over 5 ft 8 in;

and

2) Breighton score
5/9
I can't hyperextend my elbows to the 10 degrees or fingers to 90 degrees.

Not 100% sure, still being assessed, but here goes.

Major criteria

Current beighton score 7 or 8, (historically 9, but can't touch floor with flat hands now, only finger tips.)

Arthraligia yes more than 3 years in nearly all my joints.

Minor criteria

Dislocation in 5 plus joints including my Jaw
Subluxtion in atleast 5 joints

Bursitis

Marfanoid habitus

Abnormal skin. Yes ceaseraen scar breaks down, took months to heal.
Thin skin on my lower limbs, tears easily
Stretch Marks

Eye signs, got that to look forward too, my dad had gluacoma, my son has the droopy eyelid

Varicose viens, yes since I was 17

Well last Sunday my geneticist phoned and while we were talking (he was making sure that I get an echo done soon) he said that my score was a 4/9.  So...from looking at the new Brighton diagnosic criteria (which most docs in Canada don't seem to be using at the moment) here is my score:

I've got two Major:
Major Criteria

A Beighton score of 4/9 or greater (either currently or historically)  <--YUP

Arthralgia for longer than 3 months in 4 or more joints<-- YUP

and I've got two Minor:

Dislocation/subluxation in more than one joint, or in one joint on more than one occasion<--YUP knee caps according to my rheumy sublux.  

Varicose veins or hernia or uterine/rectal prolapse. <-- YUP I've got some nice bulging veins in my feet.  

I think the new criteria for diagnosing HMS is a lot better than just the beighton score system which does not take into account the hypermobility of other joints not included.    I only wish my docs knew or used this criteria.
