Hi Nicole,
A lateral release is when the OS cuts the tight lateral structures (lateral retinacular) to correct patellar tilt.  The rehab from this is usually fairly easy.  I was back to "normal" in a couple of months.  Because they are cutting soft tissues there is usually a fair amount of swelling.  The LR will only correct patellar tilt and can cause other problems.  Please go to www.orthosupersite.com and watch the video on the history of the LR by Dr. Fulkerson.  You will need to register on the site but it is free and only takes a couple of minutes.  Make sure that your OS is doing it only to correct patella tilt, and not some other problem that it won't work for.

Take care,
Patty

hi nicole,

i have had both the lateral release and the plica removal.  unfortunately, the plica alone didnt help my troubles and i had two more surgeries to correct things.  but the plica is just a piece of tissue thats in your knee and can sometimes cause a snapping feeling in your knee.  usually people arent bothered by it in their knee but like some on here, it does bug us.

i wish the very best for you on your surgery.  the link that patty provided is a very useful tool!  good luck and keep us up to date!

Nicole1788,

Good luck with your surgery tomorrow.  It is very tough going into surgery not really knowing what the doctor is going to do, but if you trust your OS then that is the best thing to do.

You want to find out what is wrong and get it fixed before you have a worse condition on your hands.

Good luck with the surgery and let us know how everything goes.

Hey, good luck with your surgery and I think that if you stick to the OS's post-op protocol, you can be back to cross country in no time!  Take it easy and remember : RICE....Rest, Ice, Elevate and Compression (compression as tolerated, of course) :)

Sending well wishes!!!
