Anyone 20-30 years old ever had a total knee???
« on: July 08, 2005, 03:01:47 AM »
Hello All!
I was wondering if anyone out there has had a total knee at a young age?  I am 29 and that is my only other option if my High Tibial Osteotomy does not heal anymore than what it currently already has.

I know that the fear is that I would out live my total knee.  Any info???

Thanks

Haven't had it, afriad I may eventually need it.

The one point I've decided on for sure, and will push if I need to, is this:
If I have a TKR in my 30s, a revision in my 40s, and somewhere in my 50s I start to feel really handicapped, I'm ok with that.  The alternative is to be handicapped in my 30s and 40s, and able to start living again in my 50s.  If I'm going to be in agony or limited in my movement/activities, I'd rather do it when I'm older than when I'm younger.

Hope that helps in your decision making process.  Good luck with the knee.

ACI was supposed to be 2/21/06.  On 6/29/06 Insurance co said have another scope, and if it still looks good, they'll ok the ACI.

I'm in the same boat as blackbeltgirl and can echo her feelings/thinking.  I would much rather have a "good" knee now and enjoy my son as he grows older than when I am much older and he can care for me.

Out of curiousity  I asked my doc why there seems to be an age  "requirement" for a total knee.  He explained that with such an invasive procedure young folks  do have the potential of "out living" their total knee.  There is a tremendous amout of bone work involved with that surgery and if they need to do a second total knee on the same leg, it required more bone work. I guess eventually they'd run out of room in your leg to put the hardware, since each time they'd have to drill deeper etc.

At least that's, my view...

I had never thought of the idea of being healthy while I raise my family and more "handicapped" when I am older.  That is really something to ponder.

The youngest that my dr. has ever done a TKR is 31 and I am 29 so that is really not much of a difference.  Keep giving your opinions and thanks!

I have needed TKRs since I was about 25, been putting it off for over 20 years and hoping to hold out for another 10!  I have had to give up all my sports (that hurt!) but I refuse to give up everything I enjoy so I keep hiking (including backpacking), bike riding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.  I have a very high pain tolerance and I figure that my knees are so bad that they can't get much worse (my OS disagrees with that)!  So I chose to not risk spending the last 30 years of my life in a wheel chair and so I put off TKR.

I've held out til now.  Had an osteotomy at 39 y/o - ouch!  Now I'm 44 and scheduled for bilateral TKR in the fall because I'm through sitting on the bench, in the ski lodge, on the couch etc. as my family enjoys themselves actively without me!  Make sure you're with the best doc and hospitals though - as you can see all over this forum, not all tkr expereinces are positive.

You might try going down to the Knee replacement thread and read thru some old posts from 2 months ago. A girl called Jennifer82 had one done in May at the age of 22. You might try private messaging her or posting a message to her. I haven't seen her post for awhile. She also posted a bit under the March TKR thread. I had my TKR at age 48 in January and was told too young also.

SSS

Go down to the knee arthritis subject... to the total knee replacement section. In that section there are different posts just like this section. Try the March TKR thread. She satrted posting in April or May. On the 2nd page of that knee replacement section she started her own post...just look for her name...Jennnifer82. I think you can also go to SEARCH and type in her name for her postings.
