ACL/Bone Contusion Therapy Techniques
« on: July 07, 2005, 08:18:35 AM »
Hello all.  I'm just wondering...but first, a bit of background.

About 2 and a half years ago, playing basketball, I jumped, landed, heard a couple of pops and had problems walking, with swelling, etc., etc.  I went and saw an orthopedist, had an MRI, and was told that my ACL is partially torn.  Also, I should lift weights to try to strengthen the muscles in my legs and that surgery was not necessary, as I was still in high school and had volleyball to play.  I was fitted for a DonJoy brace and wear it whenever doing anything that may cause another injury.  I had a few small incidents with my knee (clicking, occasionally a lot of pain, etc., etc.)  About 5 months ago, while playing basketball, I jumped and landed on an opponent's foot.  Immediately, I suffered a ton of pain and could not walk.  I could not place any weight on my knee.  I went back to my orthopedist, had an MRI, and was told that I had a bone contusion and that it would heal on itself in about 6 weeks.  I was also told to do more weight lifting and that surgery is not necessary.  Well, here it is, 5 months later, and my knee is still bothering me on occasion.  If I have to put too much weight on it or step wrong, my knee pops and crackles and causes pain.

Well, now for the questions.  Despite the fact that my doctors said that surgery isn't necessary, does anyone think that I should?  Both times, it was surgery would have been extremely inconvenient, but if I should do it, then I want to have it done.  The doctors seemed to think that surgery would help.

Secondly, what type of lifting should I do so as to prevent this from happening again?  Any certain exercises that help?

Thanks a lot!

Here is an article that might help you out a little.  It discusses life without Acl or the reconstruction surgery/rehab afterwards.

Check out the tabs at the top of the page once in this site.....

You could also read posts in the 'Specialist's Office' - 'Cruciate Ligaments' and also 'Rehab Dept' - 'Post-Op Diary' sections will give you more information.... Second opinions from fresh eyes of another OS sometimes is also a good option.....

Good luck with your decisions.

sounds to me like you need another MRI. If you are getting symptoms than that's not 'no need' for treatment. PT may help but how did your OS make his diagnosis??
