what is this strange hard bump on knee after recon?
« on: June 24, 2005, 02:23:45 AM »
its been 2 yrs. since i tore my acl. i had surgery. for a year a few mo. my knee stayed very swollen so i couldnt see the shape of my knee.  when i began to agressively play soccer again the swelling subsided.  i noticed a weird hard bump under the scar where the patellar tendon was cut and grafted... it is not painful or anything much.  i cannot get down on my knee cause that hurts.  its mostly cosmetic- i think! my OS said he could go in and shave it down, he wasn't too concerned.  my PT thinks its crazy! he said it looks like some thing (there's a name for it but its too big and i dont remember what he called it) where when a person goes through a growth spirt the tendons grow faster than the bones.  he said it could just be that the patellar tendon was pulling on my tibia and so i have a raised bump of stretched bone.  has anyone experienced this or do you know what it might be?

Interesting... I am not a Dr., but I am 13 years post ACL surgery. My first thought when I read your title was that it was scar tissue.... I had some very odd bumps and strange skin colorations for the first couple years. I also had a lot of pain below my knee cap in the patellar region, but over time it went away.... My thoughts now are that if it doesn't hurt and doesn't affect your ability to do the things you want to do, don't worry about it too much. I know that is kinda lame, but I used to always worry about things, and now I have re-injured my knee and really have something to worry about!  :-\ Hopefully, nothing serious, but won't know anything till I get a referal to Ortho.

good luck!

Could be that you have Osgood-Schlatter's (sp?).  Use the search engine on this bulletin board and you will find lots of info on it that might help.

Good luck,

hi

i have a bump like you describe also...  my first OS who performed the ACL recon didn't know what it was, he told me it was bone LOL

ok, so i see a very competent knee specialist now...  he tells me it is the patella tendon

here's what he said happened...  my graft was taken from my patella tendon...  the PT's had me exercising too vigorously too soon after recon... the incision on the patella tendon didn't have enough time to heal together so in response to vigorous exercise it grew excessively

kinda sounds like what you describe, shouldn't cause problems but there's a massive lump on front of our knees
9/04 complete ACL tear left leg
11/04 ACL reconstruction
6/05 Arthoscopic Scar Tissue resection
