worried, depressed
« on: June 17, 2005, 09:48:40 AM »
Went to the doctors today. They want to do an MRT to see how my knee is healing.  They put a screw in last year to hold a cart. fragment (for OCD) but he said if the bone underneath hasn't healed, there is a 100% chance it will fall out within a year. Then there are options of ACT or OATs, but I am moving in two months!  Right now I am living in Europe, where I am covered by health care. Once I get to the US, I have to wait like a year for "pre-existing exclusions" to pass, so my knee can be covered. If the MRT results are bad I have the option of risking surgery right before leaving (he said OATS would be 80% chance of success but not sure if it is possible, and then the alternative ACT would be 60%) OR I can take the risk of hoping my knee holds up until I can get treatment in the US after a year. Otherwise I can't afford the operation. My visa runs out soon, so I have no option of extending my stay.
So needless to say I am at a loss of what decision to make if the MRT results are bad. I have a bad feeling about this..... And after a half year of rehab and recovery from the first surgery, it is disheartening if it proves to be a complete waste of time and failure.....

Hi  :)
You really do sound low sending hugs xxx.  Things always seem to come at the wrong time, but try not to get disheartened, if your OS carried out OATS then 80% is a good success rate  :) and perhaps this could be done ASAP before you leave for the US.  Have you spoken to the insurance about your predicament, perhaps there are ways round it?  Let's hope things are not as bad as you think when you have your scan,  fingers crossed, sending lots of good wishes your way.  I am feeling fedup too so maybe we can vent on one another.   Take care for now xxx Jax  PS  A chocolate Bar always seems to help  ;D

Hey !!

Sorry to hear about the descisions you have to make. You are in a tough situation.
I agree with Jax if you need it it would be better doing it in Europe before you leave if you are able to it.
Try talk with insurance peps and see what they can offer you if a surgery is necessery.
Thinking of you !!
Feel free IM if you need talking.

Thanks a lot Jax. Maybe I'll go for that chocolate bar.  :)

OATS and 80% sounds okay, but I'm not guaranteed in getting that. The doctor cant say for sure until they look inside. ACI with 60% odds is not good enough, since failure would leave me with a huge hole in my knee.

Whats even more frustrating is that the doctors here give me info on a need to know basis. Maybe it is a cultural thing. I woke up from the last surgery to find they had used screws to fix the cartilage in place, a procedure they never bothered to tell me about before hand. I'm not questing the wisdom of the decision, but I don't really appreciate the fact that before surgery they misled me into thinking I would have one of two procedures (ACI or OATS) and then did something else while I was unconscious. So in the next surgery, I am not sure what they would do! He may say OATS and then I wake up and he's done something else. It seems like the patient is just supposed to not ask questions and do whatever they say. This attitude is another reason I am skeptical of having surgery before leaving. But the doctor has frightened me with his sudden talk that the fragment could fall out (a possibility that they previous said wouldn't happen -- more misleading info!) .

As you can probably tell I am at my wits end with this. Two months for surgery and recovery is not enough. It took me longer than that last time. If the surgery fails, I will be in even worse shape, having to move with a broken knee.  Also, I don't have time to get a second opinion -- it takes months just to get an appointment with any specialist here.  I'm not comfortable dealing going to surgery with these same doctors without a second opinion. Yet if I leave  I have to wait for treatment and hope nothing goes wrong.

Well, I will have to see what the MRT says. But I'm very anxious about it, and having a very bad feeling about the entire situation.

thanks again to both of you.

btw, Jax, feel free to PM me if you need to rant too. I can certainly sympathize.

Back again  :)
Well I know what you mean when you say  : "a need to know basis" how true that is!  >:( you feel like you have to fish to get answers  ???.  My last op I was just discharged without knowing what had been done and it took 2 weeks to find out through my PT not the OS!

Well, I rang up the OS's Secretary this afternoon and told her I was soooooooo fed up and in pain, did she have any idea when my appointment would be.  She told me they were doing the list over the weekend and she would probably be able to give me a date on Tuesday, so that sounds a bit better  :-\ but having all that time over the last 6 months to think about it I am quite nervous.

Did you have the chocolate bar in the end?  I have just had double choccy fix!  Try not to worry and get down, I'm here if you need to vent or chat, take care hugs Jax

Yes, I had two chocolate bars, and then rented some DVDs just to blank my mind out for a bit.

Personally I can't stand doctor's who 1) are stingy with information 2) barely have time to discuss decisions with you.

That's awful they discharged you without even telling you what they did. It is your body after all and you have to live with the consequences.

It's down to being that insignificant number not a person!
I am stocking up on the DVDs but trying not to watch them yet (will have loads of time after my TTT  ::) eventually ???) What DVDs are you into? I have loads of films that I haven't seen yet so I think I will end up with square eyes.   xx Jax

Update: Good news, the MRI results were positive, er, I mean negative, which is good. So far, the knee is healing, at least as far as the MRI can tell. So any further work is postponed for now, at least delayed til after the move and hopefully never needed. I think I dodged a bullet on this one.  :) :) :)

DVDs are a great way to take your mind off things for a bit. I like foreign ones, but the local shop has a limited selection, so it's always, take a look to see if they have anything new .... um, nope. Otherwise I just watch whatever's new or available.

What's a TTT?

Great news !! Hope your knee continue to heal so you don't need any surgery.
I aso think DVD is a great way to spend boring time. I have just got me 10 new DVD's and saw one yesterday eve a swedish movie. We don't produce that much but many are them are quality ones.
Good luck to you !!

TTT stands for Tibial Tuberosity Transfer which is usually performed with a Lateral Release.  I am having a Fulkerson (named after the surgeon who first performed it) and will have two screws inserted to hold the bone in place  :-\ :-[ :'(.  How Vile!!! and it's going to happen on Thursday !!! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o Calming words definitely needed  ::)

Thanks to both of you for your encouragement.

The TTT sounds unpleasant to say the least, but I'm sure you will be fine so don't worry. I have two screws myself, titanium. At least titanium doesn't set off metal detectors, which I had wondered about.  :) Will the screws be permanent?

Be sure to have plenty of books, DVDs, etc. to take your mind off things afterwards. I also found a simple rolling chair (like an office chair, which I got from Ikea for cheap) was very helpful once I got home. It's impossible to carry drinks for example with crutches. So I wheeled myself around with a roller chair. Very helpful, but be careful to also use crutches and do the appropriate weightbearing. My doctor said too little weight bearing can be as bad as too much. But when you want some coffee and no one is there to help you, the rolling chair beats acrobat feat of carrying a drink with two crutches!

Good luck!!

I cheated with the coffee thing, I moved the whole thing,,,,, coffee maker, cream, sugar, everything into the den where I could sit in the recliner and pour myself as many cups as I wished to make.  ;D A back pack is also a great thing, you can put sandwiches, can drinks, the phone, anything in it and still have two free hands to crutch with.

good luck Jax and great news pomo

Good luck, missy. I always feel anxious before those tests. It's just that I've had so much bad news at the hands of doctors, so I am surprised if I hear any good news.

Crossing our fingers!
