Two surgeries and still pain
« on: June 06, 2005, 12:44:18 AM »
Hi all, I am new to this site, I am very frustrated and am hoping someone might have some answers for me. I had a menistcal tear repair (arthroscope) in October 2004, had a very long recovery, couldn't bend my leg, was on crutches for 6weeks. Swelling was the worst, soon as I put any weight on it swelled up like a melon. Had water therapy, PT, cautisone needle, nothing helped. Went to different, specialist, had MRI, he found another horizontal tear, he suggested a Lateral Release, so he went in and fixed the tear and did the release. ( Also gave me a femal pain block in surgery). It has now been  4 months ( that was done 10th Feb 2005) and I am still having pain when I wieght bear on my leg and have swelling everyday , I have had a lot of numbness as well, mainly large patches on my upper thigh and around my swelled knee. ( Doctor thinks this is nerves 'playing up'. I have just been back to him and he did another MRI this time of my lower spine to rule out back problems ( apparently this is sometimes the case in knee problems) Everything fine there. He is stumped and wants to refer me to another doctor, he has run out of answers, I am thinking of trying acupunture. Don't know what else to do, haven't been able to go back to work. If it was improving slowly I would just need patience, but as I have had NO improvment, (backwards some days if anything) in the last 8 weeks) I am not feeling very positive. Any help would be very appreciated.

I am so sorry you're going through all of this. I know how frustrating it is when the specialists are baffled.

I just wanted to throw out a plug for acupuncture (see my "Acupuncture update" thread). I was at my wits' end, and so sick and tired of hearing how "bizarre" my knee situation was, so I decided it was time for some alternative medicine. I've seen definite improvement in the past 3-4 weeks since I started getting treatments. Acupuncture has been the only thing that has helped my situation so far, and that's after seeing three different knee specialists (one of whom specializes in "challenging cases"  ::) ).

I can't swear that it will work for you, but I'm just saying it's worth a try if you feel that you're not getting anywhere and are desperate for some improvement. Good luck!

Hey !!

Please go rule out first what's causing your pain before trying any treatments so you not act up your pain more. What kind of doc is your referal too, another ortho, painmanagement doc or someone else ? I have a nervedamage and they didn't notice that before years of treatments and different OS. And that refers other kind of treatment then what the OS could offer me.
Please let us know how you are doing. Feel free ask or IM if you need support or have questions.
