Type V Tibial Plateau Fracture Fear
« on: June 05, 2005, 11:06:05 AM »
Hi Everyone,
I was injured on the 29th of May and had surgury in Bahrain the following day. Because of my location I have a general question or two. First is it normal to get so much hardware? My plateau had 17 breaks and the meniscus was driven down into the break and had to be retrieved. The hardware consists of a plate and seven screws. The incision was closed with 41 staples. The surgeon mentioned vaguely that there was a slight possibility of amputation† :o under some vague circumstances. I have heard my surgury was in fact archaeic and that there are some locations that fix these fractures using epoxy type injections and other neat space age repairs.
The other relates to recovery. I am in pretty much constant pain except at night when I can take medication that will allow me to sleep. How long can I expect this recovery to take?

WOW!† You really did it to the max.† Check the specialistís officedown the board a little and the section on Bone Breaks around the knee; you will see posts from others with similar injuries.† Plates and screws are VERY common for your type of fracture.† The other stuff can be used in certain centers and under specific circumstances; it's not for every type of injury.† Yes in very rare instances any injury like yours could possibly end up in amputation, but it is quite rare.

Do you have pain meds that help at all?† You need to get the pain under control; your body does not heal as well when you are in severe pain.† Talk to your GP about help if the OS doesn't give you anything to help the pain.

You're talking about a significant injury that will probably take several months before you are fully recovered.

Good Luck! !† Let us know how you are doing.

Rozzie,
Thanks. I am so happy I found out about this site. Actually, they gave me some very good drugs but when you have to work you can't take them. Plus I am afraid of the narcotics. It took me a few days to come down off the Morphine, spinal block, and God knows what else they gave me in the Hospital. There is so much info here. I better get started. One week down. 2 months to a year to go. Ho boy I need my physio today. Tom  :'(
