Questions
« on: May 22, 2005, 05:44:22 PM »
Well...my TTT is about 10 days away. I've got a few questions.

Is there anything really important (that I can't live without) that I should get beforehand? I emailed the nurse and they provide crutches and I'll my prescriptions at pre-op the day before surgery. I was thinking about getting a purse/backpack type of thing. I will be staying at my grandparents house for the first week, then driving the 8 hours back home. Their master bedroom is on the first floor, so they said I could use that while I'm there.

My OS is doing what I assumed was an MPFL Recon. I know it involves the MPFL, but he said it was a relatively new procedure. He would basically reattach the MPFL b/c mine is torn away from dislocations.....and he didn't want to tighten it very much for risk of overcorrection.....I have trochlear dysplasia so he said it is feasible that that I could start dislocating medially if they correct too much.....Anybody know anything about this?

This isn't exactly related, but I suppose I'll get all my questions out at one time, lol. I've been having a lot of stomach pain over the last few months and have assumed it all stemmed from taking so much Advil. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I have a physical w/ my GP on Friday, and we'll ask then, but I was just wondering if anyone else had problems w/ this.

Thanks!

~Erin~

Hey Erin~

I dont have any advice for the MPFL part of the surgery.  However, with my first TTT and now my upcoming second,  i found that a bag helped alot.  beforehand, i would suggest getting a litte TV tray or something so you can put stuff on it so you dont have to run around the house all the time.  putting your meds up there, the TV remote, some snacks, and plenty of water. for the bag, i always carry around my nike gym sack.

http://amos.shop.com/amos/cc/main/ccn_search/st/nike+gym+sack/sy/productsx/ccsyn/260/prd/18149434/ccsid/399746928-7540/adtg/05190541    you can buy em online or else they are pretty much at any department or sporting goods store!!

again, wishing you the best of luck on your surgery!

many hugs,
~Mandy

Thanks Mandy!!

umm...also, my OS said that I would be in a "splint" for 4 weeks. Is this a ROM brace like others on here have had?

Thanks!

Erin:
Every OS uses a different post-op protocol.  I'm vaguely surprised that they didn't give you the brace when you scheduled surgery.  I was sent home with my brace and a whole raft of pre-op instructions.

hey erin~
i dunno what the splint is to your OS.  i know that when i talked to my OS before surgery, my initial appt with him, we discussed the ROM brace.  however, when i went to surgery, the nurse told me i would be in an immobilzer, and sure enough, thats what i was in.  but i guess you will find out soon enough.  hopefully you wont get stuck in the bulky immobilizer i had....YUCK!!

keep your head up and youll do AWESOME!!

Thanks again, Mandy!!

Jen....no...my os didn't give me my brace when I scheduled surgery. I called back several days after the appt to schedule it and the OS office is about 8 hours from where I live. What brace were you given?

Thanks!!

Basically this one:

They fitted it at the OS's office (another advantage of going to a huge sports medicine complex -- all specialties are on hand...imaging, PT, OT, bracing, etc., etc.).  I suppose they don't all do that -- probably they'll fit you prior to surgery when they do the crutch training (usually just before surgery, if I understand things correctly).

Peace,
Jen
