RECURRENT BAKERS CYST. KNEE PAIN SWELLING FOLLOWING SCOPE
« on: May 18, 2005, 05:11:25 PM »
Hi
I am desperately looking for help with my knee condition.
History - ski injury mar 03 had scope done in 9-03 for meniscal tear
knee never healed they found a bakers cyst in jan 04 and chondromalacia and talked me into surgery again in Jan 04.  Knee healed was a lot better for 6 months as long as I dont' do much physical activity.  Sick of that and started walking and exercising 2 months ago and knee is swelling huge painful.  Had MRI 2 weeks ago and they found another bakers cyst , a parameniscal cyst or ganglion cyst and a subchondral bone cyst.  They want to scope again.  I'm not so sure what to do.  I am only 38 and want to be able to ski and hike again.
Any suggestions or help sure would be appreciated
Thanks

Blonde Mom,

First of all that really bites, I feel for you.

Consider getting your "complete" records from the OS and copies of MRI(s) to get a second oppinion from another OS.  Just to be sure that the first OS was on the right track.  If I understood this right there were multiple cysts or was there one and they just werre not sure what kind it is.  I have never been through the Cysy in the knee, I have had them on ankle but never needing removal.  If the OS missed a root, it could have simply grown back.  Lovely thought, not.

Good luck!  ;D

Unfortunately, the Baker's cyst and the sub-chondral bone cysts will continue to return as long as the underlying condition that caused them is still present.  Having one of them return (even if it's a ganglion cyst) has nothing to do with the surgeon.  It sounds like you have some arthritic change going on in the knee, and you will need to have a long, honest conversation--likely with a series of surgeons who specialize in Degenerative Joint Disease or DJD.

Pick up Dr. Grelsamer's book, What your doctor may not tell you about knee pain and surgery.  Also, check out his web page http://www.kneehippain.com  Try reading up on chondral lesions at www.steadman-hawkins.com (go to the patient information link and read about DJD and chondral lesions).  Having sub-chondral cysts is a pretty serious sign of underlying irritation, and the options you are facing are completely dependent on the state of your knee--whether the damage is highly localized or focal, or widespread, etc.  A Baker's cyst is also a sign of underlying arthritic change.

JUST STARTING TO PANIC SINCE SURGERY DATE IS ONLY 2 DAYS AWAY.  ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO EXPECT THE FIRST FEW DAYS?
ANY OF YOUR EXPERTISE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
