So frustrated!
« on: May 01, 2005, 11:26:53 PM »
I am a 37 year old female that has been diagnosed with Chondromalacia from the maltracking of the patella, as well as medial meniscus loss.  My OS did x-rays and MRI and found that.  I have pain pretty much all around my knee now.  I did 8 weeks of PT, had a 2nd oinion from an OS who told me to rest.  I've been resting now for a month and still have extreme pain and swelling.  I am due to see my 3rd OS this THursday.  He is a specialist at cartilage transfer and I'm hoping he will recommend that and maybe TTT.  Any thoughts?  I know it's an extreme procedure (the TTT), but the pain is not going away.

Thanks,
Laura

Laura,
You said you did PT but did you try taping/swimming/braces for your knees? PT is not the only thing that can be done for you to help the mal-tracking problem. Adn did your OS tell you what grade of chondro you had? Depending on the grade, sugrery shouldn't be the first option. Usually doing a TTT is a very last resort when everything else fails. Hope your OS app.t on thursday goes well

Hey Laura,

i agree with krista.  try all of your options first.  trust me the last thing that you want to have is surgery, and should only be used for a last option.  for myself, i was in PT for a little over a year, took 5 different NSAIDS, tried bracing, taping, and rest.  it wasnt until this last february that i had my TTT.  i am glad that i had it, becuase there was no way in h*ll that my knees would correct themselves due to my maltracking being VERY bad.  even tho surgery may sound wonderful now, one must really be preapred to go thru everything, recovery included.  i am also a very active athelete and have a REAL hard time adjusting to not being able to do things.

just try all your options, please! :)  have you tried taking any NSAIDs? you may wanna check into that for the pain and swelling.  until you get to the doc, continue icing and resting.

good luck with everything!

Thanks Krista and Mandy.  I have been taking Ibuprofen religiously for about 5 months, as well as Glucosamine and MSM.  Some of my PT was in water, but it didn't seem to help either.  I went back to my trainer this morning and she is now helping me with more knee and quad. strengthening exercises.  It just seems like something could be done! >:(  I can't stand being so immobilized!  Anyway, thanks for all the good info. and thoughts.
