Magnetic resonance imaging.

Like an X-ray, but not an X-ray, this form of imaging uses powerful magnetic fields to distort the interfaces between body structures briefly, and allow the very clever computer to draw the body structures in sections (like CT).

We have some experts on the board, and they will, I am sure, give a much better explanation.   Suffice it to say the procedure is expensive, often you are put inside this rather claustrophobic machine, and the images which are obtained are amazing as they show not only the bones but the soft tissues and fluids as well.
