Patellar relocation
« on: April 11, 2005, 08:29:32 PM »
Hi, I'm new here, can't get in to see my specialist until Friday, so I'm hoping someone here can help.  About 12 years ago, I had a severe problem with my knee dislocating.  I went to a specialist, and was advised that I needed a surgery to re-locate my patellar tendon and loosen the ligaments on the outside of the knee, and tighten the ones on the inside to pull my kneecap in to keep it from dislocating.  I had the surgery and haven't had any problems until now.

Lately, I've had some pain and swelling.  It isn't really bad, but it is painful to bend my knee.  What could be causing this, and do you think I'll have to have surgery again?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Its very hard to say what the problem is, I'm thinking that maybe it could be chondromalacia (softening/damage to the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap) which is a common problem especially when you've suffered dislocations as each time your kneecap dislocates you do further damage to the cartilage.  Chondromalacia can be extremely painful - I describe it as a very very bad toothache in your knee - does this sound anything like what you're feeling?  It can also make your knee swollen and stiff, have you tried applying heat or ice to see if it helps with the pain?  If not, give it a try - lots of people swear by icing but I personally get more relief from applying heat.  If things don't settle down soon I would recommend you see your OS again just to be sure there's nothing else going on in there, it sounds like you had the same as me - a TTT, Lateral Release and Medial Reefing.  Good luck.
