knee pain when using stairs or up and down hills
« on: February 22, 2005, 04:08:18 PM »
My knees seem fine walking on the flat but the slightest incline causes pain to the knee and then a burning sensation when I stop. Not only does this happen when I climb stairs but also walking on the slightest of inclines. Going downstairs or downhill hurts but not as bad I also have slightly knock knees.

Has anyone had similiar experiences or maybe knows what the cause could be.

Sandy S,

Hi, use the old R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression & elevate)  this should help you out with those pesky stairs.  Taking motrin type nsaids might help you also - if you can take them.  Maybe you have overdone it lately!  If you are still having problems after doing this then you should make an appointment and see what your GP thinks - they can prescribe medications or refer you to an orthopedic surgeon, if they think it is necessary.

Good luck & let us know how you are doing.

I have been diagnosed with a multitude of joint problems with Osteoarthritis being an underlying condition.  One of the problems is:  For the past 4 years I have had "pinching" in my right knee when pressure such as pushing back in a chair, climbing stairs, decending stairs, etc.  Recently my rhumatologist ordered an MRI which showed Chondromalasia Grade 3.  Notable popping/cracking sounds when walking, along with hot, burning sensations and general pain.  The pain used to only occur when I was doing "specific" activities, but now it is constant.  When I mentioned it to the OS recently, he acted as though it was not a big deal and suggested that I go to PT and take over the counter pain meds.  Well, to me this IS a "Big Deal" in that the pain is tremendous.  I am now thinking of going to the Mayo Clinic for a complete evaluation (especially with other joints being equally as bad as the knee - ie: Frozen Shoulder, Labral Tear, Herniated Disc, Hip Joint Pain, etc.).  Has anyone been to the Mayo Clinic?  If so, please let me know what your experience was like.  Do you recommend?

Thanks.

ALyn,

It is just so maddening when you feel that an OS does not understand.  Since you have been diagnosed and are not getting any definate treatment plan from your OS, maybe it is time to get a second opinion from another OS.  It certainly does not hurt to have fresh eyes look at your knees - maybe someone else will be able to devise a plan and start treating your condition.

PT - can help a lot with ultrasound, laser and other treatments that really help with swelling and pain.

I have no experience with Mayo Clinic, but complete assessment would never hurt.

Good luck to you, and let us know how you are doing.  ;)

Thanks guys for the reply.  I made the appointment with Mayo Clinic for May 19th for a complete evaluation - mainly to see if there is any underlying problem that is actually causing the Osteoarthritis and severe joint pain.  They said they have every type of specialist there, so whatever they find maybe they can fix it (that would be nice).
Meanwhile, I had another steroid shot in the shoulder and I'm up for the knee shots (someone called these shots "rooster juice") next week, as well as continuing PT to try an strengthen the muscles as much as possible.
