DESPERATE....PLEASE HELP...severe pain & swelling...
« on: February 18, 2005, 06:08:40 PM »
Severe pain in L knee for 4 1/2 months..Got cortisone/lido shot in L knee 5 1/2 weeks ago...12 hours later knee swelled up to 3x it's size and severe pain and redness.  Lots of ice...saw rheumatologist..."Didn't drain", put me on methotrexate 12.5 once a week and duragesic patch for pain.  Was told 3-5 days, then it would be better.  Well, I'm 1 in a million...and here we are 5 1/2 weeks later...still with swelling (visual). redness and severe pain and now welts only on L knee.  I'm on crutches and pretty much off my leg most of the time now.  If I do go out, I can only go to a store with a wheelchair.  My x-ray came back ok, my labs came back ok and I just got the results of a full body nuclear scan....shows inflammation in the L ankle only.  TWO days ago, it flared up again 2x the size and as I said, the welts appeared for no know reason.  I went to ER and after 4 hours of waiting....left in the night, came home and took valium...figured I'd be better off at home since it was a 12 hour wait at the ER and I could see my Rheumie yesterday in the morning.  Didn't sleep much (not unusual right now) and ended up going to ER yesterday AM.  They took me in right away (thank God) and blood test came back good...u/s my L knee and showed fluid in the knee...but not too bad, got a pain shot (finally) which took the edge off.  From there, straight to the rheumi's office and he said he DIDN'T want to drain it....didn' want to risk infection.  Said continue Methotrexate...we need to see if it helps after 6 weeks of use and duragesic patch and ordered a lidocaine patch to put on my knee.  He said the swelling is actually superficial...but still goes into the tissue but no internal damage showing up which is good.  My knee feels like a "heating pad" is on it (unless I ice for 2 hours straight) all the time...The welts come and go...very strange :o  To sum it up..I'm very confused...this doesn't feel right, although I've seemed to have all the right tests. ANA has been neg., RA is borderling with no family history of it, they call what I have now (for 1 year) "UNSPECIFIED ARTHRITIS" Any ideas, thoughts, comments would be greatly appreciated.  I don't tolerate pain well anyways, but this has just thrown me over the edge.  Below, I'll give a brief description of my history this past year.
2/14/04Allergic to penicillin, but took Augmentin(Amoxicillin)unknowingly and had severe allergic reaction..almost death. Then Steven's Johnson Syndrome, steroids for 5 mos., vioxx, celebrex, plaquenil, Bextra,Acupuncture for 3 mos. helped back, but not other joints. I have lived now for 1 year with severe joint pain in knees, ankles, elbows and back. Basically looking to buy wheel chair or I won't ever leave the house. I'm only 35, my marriage is struggling as you can imagine, my 4 young kids had to be placed in daycare and we've actually recently hired a live in nanny due to all the necessary housework/cooking etc...This just seems to be getting worse and worse with not a lot of answers.  Obviously depression due to all the life changes :(
Please help :'(
JENNIFER [email protected]    Thanx for reading and my prayers are with all of you too.

Jennifer,

I can't give you any advice except, have you gotten a second or third opinion?  Sometimes a new set of eyes can see something that can offer hope.  Many here have gotten help by seeking additional opinions and specialists.

Sorry you are in such a bad shape right now.

. . . . Sending you   H U G S   and   E N C O U R A G E M E N T ! ! ! . . . .

Can't really help but have you had a complete physical with a review of all systems? Maybe allergy testing too? There could be something else contributing.
