Stupid party trick!
« on: February 14, 2005, 11:06:55 PM »
Saturday night I was at a club and did the splits (which I have done many many times with absolutely no problems).  This time my knee made a pop sound and I wanted to scream. I sat there stunned for a minute then brought my leg forward and it poped again. Like it went back into the spot it came out of.  I can bear weight on my leg although not comfortably.  My knee is swollen, my calf is tight and sore, when I move certain ways I get a sudden pain.  I have iced my knee for many hours.  It does seem to feel a little better than yesterday.  Should I wait 2 weeks to go see a Dr. (A nurses help line advised me to wait two weeks).  I have never had any knee problems.  Any advise????

No, not very stable, I tend to hold the wall or anthing else when I walk.  And it seems really swollen at least internally because I can't straiten it all the way.

ok if it's not stable. don't wait. could have torn a cruciate ligament. I know people who have done that while tryign the splits.

or you could have dislocated your kneecap. In either case you need to go see a doctor, preferably an orthopedist. This way you can get an x-ray and/or an MRI. The OS can also prescribe physical therapy and pain killers, etc. In the meantime, keep icing, and you could also take an anti-infamatory such as Advil if you haven't already.
Good luck, hope this helps!

You can never go wrong with going to see a doctor, you don't want to be sorry afterwards, I hope everything is okay though,

OK - I give up.  I have a orthopedist appointment today at 3:00pm.  I will let you know what happens.

I'm anxious to hear your results. It's too bad that when you least expect it.....snap. But that's the way it goes. At least you've got a lot of company.

Thank you everyone for your support!  OK, I am not very familiar with the lingo when it comes to knees so if I misspell something, please dont think I am an idiot!

I have a miniscule tear in my meniscus, I did dislocate my kneecap, but it went right back the same night.  Some soft tissue damage and some other things I didn't understand.  The thing I did understand was NO surgery!  I should be better in 2 weeks told me to take ibuprofen on a regular regime for 10 days (for swelling and pain).

I feel a lot better getting a Dr. opinion and knowing I didnt do something to my knee that was going to permanently damage it for the rest of my life!  I am 35 years old, 3 kids - 4 if you count my husband and a full time job. I cant be laid up for any period of time!   The Dr. did tell me to refrain from doing the splits for at least 6 months. And to strengthen my hamstrings so my kneecap stays where it is supposed to!

Thanks again for your support and opinions!
