Knees still painful after bilateral arthroscopies
« on: July 15, 2002, 12:55:15 AM »
I had bilateral arthroscopies in May of this year and my knees are still very painful - I've been having physio from a week after my surgery but the pain is always around.  I've been getting a sharp cramping pain in the back of my left knee and my knees are just sore all the time - as if I have walked a marathon - I'm seeing my OS at the London Knee Clinic in August - I just don't know what to do or what to ask what I should be doing.  I'm just really frustrated.  I've lost a stone since the surgery and I'm always doing my rehab exercises - can anyone shed any light on what I can do.

TIA

Hi Lizzie

First of all- don't give up with physio, it takes time to achieve results even if they aren't as good as you expected (like me).

I had bi lat LR's 4 years agao and my knees were painful for about 7 months after with cramping and crunching.

I used the homeopathic remedy arnica (usually used for bruising) to aid my healing and I did notice a difference after about 3 weeks of taking it (you can get it from Boots).

My PT also did ultrasonic massage on the area as well, so you could ask if they would do that for you, I went to the pool and did simple bends and stretches which altohg painful to begin with, wasn't half as bad as when I was out of the water doing them.

Good luck with your knees
Iona

Remind us, Lizzie, what operation you had. What exercises are you doing at the moment? When are the knees worst?

Hi KneeGuru :)

I had a partial medial menisectomy of  the L knee and had my suprapatellar plica removed as well as removing adhesions from my ACL.  With regard to the R knee it was just an investigation to see how bad the knee was as it was crunching and painful all the time after I had the medial meniscus resected to the rim.  I think that was about it - but I did have a fall the last day of my hospital stay.

I am working hard at the rehab and as Iona mentioned I was taking Arnica as well as Vitamin C to repair the tissues damaged nd I do take Glucosamine Sulphate daily to help the joints but even today after waking I find that my knees are really sore and whilst walking I felt as though my knees were not tracking properly and I keeping feeling as though I've jarred one or other knee.  It feels as though my tib and fib have stayed and my femur is still moving - hope that makes sense.

Thanks
Lizzie

Your description makes me worry a bit about the ACL. What does the OS say about its integrity?  I wonder if the cramps at the back of the knee are not hamstrings strains from walking badly. How are you at hamstrings stretches?

My PT says that I am very good at doing both quads and hamstring exercises.  I'm seeing my wonderful OS, Mr Strover at the London Bridge Hospital on 9th August - I wonder whether I should make an earlier appointment?  Just walking along the road I got the sharp pain again in my left knee and my right knee just doesn't feel like its tracking properly even though I had a LR approx 8 years ago - the knee cap feels like it is catching on something!

Not only am I doing all the exercises that my PT has told me to do I am also working in the gym using the leg press, abductor and adductor machine and approx 15 mins on the bike at a low resistance.

When I just walk along I can hear my right knee clicking and walking up and especially downstairs is a real killer.

What do you think I should do?

Thanks

Lizzie:

I to, after having medial and later menisectomy feel like my knee cap or one of the bones is catching.  I have had this feeling since about 1 week after Surgery.  At that time I was told that it was due to the swelling.

Well, I have almost no swelling, but I still have the catching feeling.  Also have a lot of pain on the lateral side, towards the lower side of the knee cap.

Also, my right knee (non operated on knee) is doing a lot of snapping and popping after having had knee problems twice in approximately 3 months (Original injury on 2-26-02 was on crutches for 3 weeks, Surgery on 6-7-02 had almost 3 fulls weeks on crutches).  Had PT both times.

So I can sympathize with your situation.

I wonder if the fall has made things worse? Maybe you can give the OS a call and ask if there is any need to come in earlier?

I would ring the secretary for your os- explain the situation and ask her to speak to your os about it, at least then he is aware of your problems and can help and maybe see you in his next avaialable clinic

Good luck- I really sympathise for you.

I think that both my knees aren't tracking properly.  Although I've had previous LR's on both knees.

I also get a sharp pain behind my left knee when I try to bend it to 90o.

I shall have a few questions to ask my OS this coming Wednesday.

Wish me luck
