I hate my knee!!!
« on: January 25, 2005, 05:12:40 AM »
(This is my first post.) I never thought the knee was such a complex thing till i injured mine. My brief story is this...  Playing netball on dec 22; upon landing from a jump my knee gave way completely and i had to be carried off the court. My GP said MCL sprain, you should be right in a week. Now, 5 weeks later and after many visits to the PT, back and forwards from GP to OS, and MRI last week, all is revealed. I have... Torn MCL. Slight tear to ACL. Torn medial meniscus. Chrondomalacia. Bone bruising. Lots of pain and swelling (still). Most problematic is the fact that my knee wont bend past 70 degrees regardless of what i do or the PT does.  OS suggests just to wait and continue PT. He says surgery  at this point will do no good, i need to increase range of motion and wait for the bone bruising in particular to settle down. Meanwhile...I'm pretty much useless and going insane. Religiously doing all the exercises they've recommended,  but want to know if anyone out there has anything else to add??
Cheers, Tanna76.

Surgery at this point is more than indicated.  Your medial menicus tear may be causing your knee to be locked.  Either push your OS for surgery, or get another opinion.  The longer your knee is like this, the harder the recovery will be once surgery is performed.  You are also putting a great deal of abnormal stress on the knee.

ATsoccergirl  is RIGHT. I would definately get  a second opinion. I am not in the medical field but that just does not sound right with that much damage inside your knee. Better safe than sorry. Let someone else look at your knee before you do further damage.

good luck

Hey Tanna !!

I agree with the others, you really need to check this knee out with another doc. Are this doc specialized on knees or orthopeadic doc in general ? You need one who is good at knees.
Let us know how it goes.

Hate to be the odd man out here, but I think your OS might be right.  I ruptured my ACL and tore my PCL and lateral and medial meniscus.  My first OS (incompetent) operated on me when my flexion was only at 90.  I have been told by 2 subsequent OS, they would never operate without better ROM.  They said operating that soon, was just asking for trouble - for me it was the development of excessive internal scar tissue.

Anyway it never hurts to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion.

Hope all these opinions aren't too confusing.  Obviously we aren't drs. we are just relating our personal experiences.

Good luck,
Pam

Hi guys, thanks for reading, and thanks for the advice. My OS is a specialist in knees, he has come highly recommended, and both my GP and my PT have supported his recommendation. The good news is, I have finally had some progress with the evil knee. I have been swimming with fins on, and also doing a bit of walking in the pool, and keeping up with all the exercises they've given me, and it actually feels like it's improving! I drove the car for the first time this week, and i reckon my ROM is now about 110degs. Hooray! It is very encouraging to have signs of improvement, as opposed to 3 weeks of it exactly the same every day. So my next visit to the OS is in 4 weeks, I still might have to get the ACL reconstructed but at least in the meantime I can say yes it seems to be getting better! I spoke to a guy who had a torn MCL, he told me that alone can take 6-8 weeks to heal, and the bone bruises I have can apparently take 3-4 months. Wow. I had never heard of a bone bruise before! Anyway, thanks again folks. I hope you are all having progress with your evil knees as well.
Best wishes.
