Any experience shared before & after oats??
« on: March 10, 2005, 03:41:47 PM »
Could you tell me about your experience such as

1. the cause of the pain
2. the condition before and after the oats
3. the recovery process

I had my ACL recon in July 2004. It seemed to be good after the recon. I started jogging 3 months after the operation. In Dec, swelling started and I had a scope in Jan. Dr said that the cartilage was worn out and a portion was deep to bone. He gave me Viartril S. After the scope. It was painful when I stood upright and put pressure on my leg. I need to bend my knee about 20 deg to avoid hurting. If no pressure was put on it, it doesn't hurt. I would like to know whether the pain comes from the leison of the cartilage? Is it possible to relieve the pain by oats?? I was very frustrated since I've had 3 operations before. My quad seems to be getting weaker and weaker since I stopped all kind of exercise after Dec. Could anyone kindly give me some advice? I have to see my OS on Mon. Many thx.

Did the doctor say you had any thinning articular cartilage around the defect (this would be arthritis)?  OATS is not recommended if there is thinning of the cartilage.  Also, how large is the defect?  OATS works best if it is less than 2.5 cm (the smaller, the better).

Actually, I don't know whether there's thinning of cartilage. If so unluckly, there's thinning of cartilage, what can be done? Nothing can be done or only ACI or total knee replacement? Waiting for your reply and many thx.

Unfortunately, I do not know what is normally done if there is thinning of the cartilage.  Since this is so common, there is probably something.  Someone else may be able to shed some light on this.  Actually, first ask your doctor whether you have thinning cartilage or not.   Then you will not have to worry about finding alternatives to OATS.

Thx a lot Joy. I visited another Dr today and he said that it's really a problem to be painful when it's weight bearing. I took an x ray which shows a little dark portion of bone. Dr said that my pain may not be caused by worn cartilage but maybe the degernation of bone. Does anyone out there heard about this?? It makes me worried a lot. On Monday, I'll go back to my OS and listen to his opinion.
