bakers cyst
«

hi everyone,
i found out a few weeks ago i have a bakers cyst it was quite painful for a while but is not too bad now. my gp and i've been to a couple haven't really told me too much about it. i do alot of martial arts which is pretty though on the knees and legs but it is not the cause of the cyst.
so my question is and hopefully someone can help is can i continue training in martial arts with the bakers cyst? the gp said continue with whatever i was doing before i had it but i don't want to risk damaging my knee.
can anyone help?
thank

A Baker's cyst is usually a sign of an underlying condition, like osteoarthritis or chondromalacia.
I would seek out a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon to have the knee fully evaluated. A GP is your first point of contact, but should not really be deciding treatment for chronic knee problems, especially in an active person. You may do much better with an orthopedic surgeon who can help you diagnose the underlying condition and get treatment for that.

thanks for your help.
this might sound naive but i'm only gone 21 and take regular excerise and never had any trouble with my knees surely i couldn't have an of those things could i?
it only came up the morning after a gave my girlfriend a piggy back home from the niteclub which would be double my weight on my knees.

Heather is right, a bakers cyst is a sign of an underlying conditino, it can also be caused my a meniscal tear. It is important to understand what the cyst actually is. It's joint fluid, that has escaped from the joint capsule, and has now formed a cyst. My Dad had a bakers cyst in the spring last year. Because had a medial meniscus tear, they went in with the scope and cleaned out the cyst and fixed the tear. He has been great ever since. You shoudl go on and see a specialist or back to see your GP because...there is something else cuasing the cyst
. Good luck and happy training

Check out under the arthritis section, I think there were a couple of threads about Baker's Cyst. Generally, there is some type of underlying damage that is causing the cyst, especially in someone of your age.
The KNEEguru gave this link for further information, maybe you should check it out as well.

Good luck.
