worrying over OS call tomorrow
« on: January 18, 2005, 12:48:36 AM »
Hi guys, I am scheduled to talk to my OS tomorrow on the phone (he is a long way off). I am concerned because #1 he thinks that my right knee pain is plica (nope,,, had that before, this is not it) and #2 when I could not get in touch with him, i went to my GP for pain management. I dont know if this will make him angry or what. My OS does not realize how bad my legs have gotten in the last few months and I dread telling him. I am not afraid of him and he is a nice guy but ,,, he is going to want to try and "fix" me and I do not want any more surgery for a while.

What kind of response have you guys gotten from your OS when you went to pain management? Do you guys think that I am worrying for nothing? Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to tell him??
any ideas and suggestions welcome
thanks in advance

Goodluck with your phone call tommorow , i'm sure it will go okay. Your OS may want to operate on you, however the final call on those things are definately your own. I can't imagine that your OS will be upset with you that you went else where for pain relief... if he is, then he isn't worth your energy argueing with him.
Goodluck and make sure you tell him what's going on.

missy -

As Linds said, even if your OS decides he wants to operate, the final call is yours. If you do not want another surgery then you most certainly do not have to have one. It is possible to treat many knee problems conservatively (ie PT, RICE, medications) and it is certainly an option for you to consider.

Your OS needs to understand the amount of pain and discomfort you are in. I've found that in previous experiences it is difficult for an OS to understand the pain aspect of orthopedic injuries and disorders. An orthopedist wants to fix the problem and sometimes they view pain management as "masking the problem", not correcting it. It's a tricky concept for many to understand so pain management can be very difficult to obtain very often.

Let your OS know that your pain is disrupting your everyday life. Tell him that the past few months have been difficult due to the pain and you need relief. It is not fair for you to deal with so many pain and discomfort nor should you HAVE to deal with it! Don't beat around the bush because you're scared; let your doctor know everything that's on your mind. You're better off being as direct as possible with your doctor because then he can find the best possible way to treat you. And if it's something that is out of his hands, he can very well refer you to a specialist who can better treat your pain.

Good luck with everything and I hope you can get some relief! I sincerely hope you feel better. :)

Best wishes,
Patricia

Hey Missy !!

Of course it's up to you if you feel you need a break from surgery to get better paincontrol instead. Noone absolutely noone can blame or force you for that.
About your painmanagement, you didn't have a choice there because you couldn't reach him.
It's obvious that you need to sit down and talk with him person to person. I know this is though and you feel nervous. Have been there so many times myself.
The best you can do while going there is to think that he's a human beeing exactly like you are. 2 persons meeting and trying to make the best options for you.
If you tough feel unsure what to say and how to act a letter written exactly how you feel to give him is never wrong. Then you don't have to tell things you feel it's hard to say. Hope this helps !! Wish you best of luck !!

Thanks guys for all your support. I will bet that I have gone over what I need to tell my OS 100 times in my head but when it comes time to say it *poof* I will draw a blank. I made myself some notes to remind me of everything that I want to tell him.

Wish me luck today
thanks again

I talked to my OS this morning. He says that I have classic plica symptoms in my good knee. I am to start exercising it to hopefully make it go away. It still doesnt hurt like the bad one did when it had plica syndrome. I am to keep in touch and may have to go back to pt AGAIN. if this doesnt work. NO bending the knee or kneeling (like i can kneel LOL)
He was not angry at all that I went to my GP for pain management. I was truly surprised and ready to find another OS if he was.
Thanks for all your support guys

Glad it all went well Missy  ;D That's always good, i'm really happy you were able to have a decent conversation with your OS and atleast got his opinion.
