Please read ! could realy do wi some help :(
« on: January 11, 2005, 10:50:52 PM »
5 months ago I damaged my knee.

I'm only 23 and have been playing amateur football for years and work out in the gym a lot. but when I have been running for about 5 minutes I till get the pain growing into the side of my knee.

I still have all the strength and stability in my knee but I played football for the first time and hurt it again.

However !! ( here it comes ! ) I am soon to join the police and have sat a entry exam, 5 interviews and a medical since last August but I have my Physical to do on Monday and I am in if I pass.

I suspect I have damaged my maniscual Tendon but am expected to run a mile and a half in 15mins as well as achieve level 10 in the bleep test.

Was wondering if anyone could tell me if I can run just this one time without doing much more damage or could I do enough damage to warrant not doing the physical ? (if I don't I need to start again ! and am not accepted )

I am on the NHS waiting list to see a specialist as it is a recurring pain. This could be a life changing decision so as much help as I can get would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for any help,

Gareth.

Gareth,
I am not injured myself but have studied alot about knee injuries due to my husband being hurt.  My father is also a policeman.  My husbands MD told us that running is the worst activity to do for your knees.  You do have the possibility to injur it again do to having to run so hard and fast to complete your exam.  Also lifting and squatting will not be good either.  If you decide to do the exam get the best cushioned and high impact shoes you can get.  Also ask the MD about a brace that may stabilize your knee.  You may be able to get the brace quickly if you are a standard fit.  Good luck to you!!!

Hi Gareth

If you can describe the pain and symptoms more it would be a lot easier to offer possible causes but from the fact that you say there is no instability and pain in the side (at the joint line by any chance? Like a tooth achey type pain?) you may have torn or damaged you MENISCUS!
These are two semi circle shaped wedges of cartilage that cushion between the bones of the leg(see the link below)

http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/html/steps/step_04_meniscus/anatomy.html

Anyway, it all depends on your pain and confidence levels. If you will not be in REAL pain(which WILL probably do HARM) but only minor discomfort (which will most likely NOT do real harm) then you might get away with wearing a strong support (pharmacies sell them here in the uk) to do the physical. My friend is a CID officer and I know he stressed out to get in so if you think you can safely do it then it might save you a lot of trouble!!

Good Luck
Big bucket handle tear to lateral meniscus from sporting injury. Arthroscopy and meniscal repair carried out June 2004. sloooowwww recovery!!

2018 - torn medial meniscus in RH knee, partial extrusion. ongoing issues,

Right ! the pain:

when Idid it, went to bed feeling tot fine after football training then woke up with my knee hurting. after a few days the pain went away but when I ran it hurt again.

When I look down at my knee, the pain seems to come from the right hand side. from the joint and just up a bit bout an inch and a half.

however I also find a bit of discomfort to the right of my knee cap and up a bit.

The pain is a kind of ache pain but can sometimes be an occasional light stab in the side of the knee.

Sorry the description isn't the best but it roughly feels like that and in that area ?

if it is my miniscus, will I be able to fix it ?

chances of football again ?

Anyway, Thank you for your help and again all the info I can get is a fantastic help !!

Gareth.

Anymore info needed can be given, means a lot to me.
