Post patella fracture night pain
« on: November 26, 2002, 04:38:36 PM »
I have not posted in a while - but I am trying to find out if anyone else has severe night pain.

My patella fracture was on September 6, 2002 and I was immediately taken in for surgery that day.  I had a horizontally fracture patella that separated by about 2 inches and the lower half fractured in dozens of areas but did not separate.  I have pins holding the two halves together and wire for the other fractures.

My biggest problem now is the night pain.  Although I am in constant discomfort during the day, it is tolerable.  At night, even with a sleeping pill and percocet, I still wake up in severe pain.  I can find no position that is comfortable (pillow - no pillow under various parts of my leg). Nothing helps and I usually lay awake for most of the night.

Any ideas about dealing with this will be most appreciated.

Hi Robin
I thought I aws the only person who suffered night pain in my leg.
My hip was the worst pain I had ever experienced but now nearly five months down the line ( My injury was very similar to yours, top part of the knee in two and quite a way away from the smashed lower parts )
I now suffer awful night pain. If I wake up and my knee is bent I cant staighten it and if it is straight I cant bend  it.
Are you still in plaster ?
I was in plaster for 10 weeks and could never get comfortable with a pillow or without.
Sorry if this is depressing you ! I thought things would be a lot easier than they have been.
Do you go to Physio now, When is your next visit to the Specialist ?
I have a visit on Dec 2nd 02 which is nearly five months to the day since my accident.
Have you been to your own G.P ?

It seemed strange to me that I would be experiencing more pain rather then less as time goes on.  Shattered patella on 9/25 while in Italy.  Returned to USA immediately, however, didn't have surgery until 10/11.  Pins and wires.  Started pt about 1 month ago and have been in varying degrees of pain since.  I have slept thru the night only twice, but some nights I get more relief then others.  I do use a thin  pillow between my knees and find if I strech my right leg (the bad one) straight at a slight angle in front of my body it helps.  I also use Tylenol with a sleep aid, it's generally good for about 4 hours.  I go for pt in the afternoon and I am not going to do any home exercises past 7:30 p.m. which will be followed up with ice.  Maybe that routine will keep the pain from firing up later at night.
9/25/02  shattered right patella,10/11/02 surgical repair .1/31/03 hardware removed. Currentley dealing with tendenosis. Spring 2004 almost 100% back!!!!
